[15:29]  1 tn Heb “splendor,” used here by metonymy as a title for the Lord.

[15:29]  2 tn Or perhaps “does not lie.”

[15:29]  3 sn This observation marks the preceding statement (v. 28) as an unconditional, unalterable decree. When God makes such a decree he will not alter it or change his mind. This does not mean that God never deviates from his stated intentions or changes his mind. On the contrary, several passages describe him as changing his mind. In fact, his willingness to do so is one of his fundamental divine attributes (see Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2). For a fuller discussion see R. B. Chisholm, Jr., “Does God Change His Mind?” BSac 152 (1995): 387-99.

[14:7]  4 tn Heb “in your heart.”

[14:7]  5 tn Heb “Look, I am with you, according to your heart.” See the note at 13:14.

[2:35]  7 tn Heb “house.”

[2:35]  8 tn Heb “and he will walk about before my anointed one all the days.”

[9:19]  10 tn Heb “all that is in your heart.”

[9:20]  13 tn Heb “do not fix your heart.”

[9:20]  14 tn Heb “and all the house of your father.”

[20:4]  16 tn Heb “whatever your soul says, I will do for you.”

[18:25]  19 tn Heb “the king’s.”

[14:19]  22 tn Or perhaps “until.”

[20:7]  25 tn Heb “good.”

[20:7]  26 tn Heb “know that the evil is completed from with him.”

[1:19]  28 tn Heb “Elkanah knew his wife.” The Hebrew expression is a euphemism for sexual relations.

[1:19]  29 sn The Lord “remembered” her in the sense of granting her earlier request for a child. The Hebrew verb is often used in the OT for considering the needs or desires of people with favor and kindness.

[1:11]  31 tn Heb “if looking you look.” The expression can refer, as here, to looking favorably upon another, in this case with compassion.

[1:11]  32 tn Heb “handmaid.” The use of this term (translated two more times in this verse and once each in vv. 16, 17 simply as “servant” for stylistic reasons) is an expression of humility.

[1:11]  33 tn Heb “seed of men.”

[1:11]  34 tn Heb “a razor will not go up upon his head.”
