1 Samuel 2:17

Context

2:17 The sin of these young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they 1  treated the Lord’s offering with contempt.

1 Samuel 16:11

Context
16:11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Is that all of the young men?” Jesse 2  replied, “There is still the youngest one, but he’s taking care of the flock.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we cannot turn our attention to other things until he comes here.”

1 Samuel 21:2

Context
21:2 David replied to Ahimelech the priest, “The king instructed me to do something, but he said to me, ‘Don’t let anyone know the reason I am sending you or the instructions I have given you.’ 3  I have told my soldiers 4  to wait at a certain place. 5

1 Samuel 21:4-5

Context

21:4 The priest replied to David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread at my disposal. Only holy bread is available, and then only if your soldiers 6  have abstained from sexual relations with women.” 7  21:5 David said to the priest, “Certainly women have been kept away from us, just as on previous occasions when I have set out. The soldiers’ 8  equipment is holy, even on an ordinary journey. How much more so will they be holy today, along with their equipment!”

1 Samuel 25:8

Context
25:8 Ask your own servants; they can tell you! May my servants find favor in your sight, for we have come 9  at the time of a holiday. Please provide us – your servants 10  and your son David – with whatever you can spare.” 11

[2:17]  1 tc Heb “the men,” which is absent from one medieval Hebrew ms, a Qumran ms, and the LXX.

[16:11]  2 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jesse) has been specified in the translation both here and in v. 12 for clarity.

[21:2]  3 tn Heb “let not a man know anything about the matter [for] which I am sending you and [about] which I commanded you.”

[21:2]  4 tn Heb “servants.”

[21:2]  5 tn The Hebrew expression here refers to a particular, but unnamed, place. It occurs in the OT only here, in 2 Kgs 6:8, and in Ruth 4:1, where Boaz uses it to refer to Naomi’s unnamed kinsman-redeemer. A contracted form of the expression appears in Dan 8:13.

[21:4]  4 tn Heb “servants.”

[21:4]  5 tn Heb “have kept themselves from women” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV); TEV “haven’t had sexual relations recently”; NLT “have not slept with any women recently.”

[21:5]  5 tn Heb “servants’.”

[25:8]  6 tc The translation follows many medieval Hebrew mss in reading בָּאנוּ (banu, “we have come”) rather than the MT’s בָּנוּ (banu, “we have built”).

[25:8]  7 tn This refers to the ten servants sent by David.

[25:8]  8 tn Heb “whatever your hand will find.”
