For as surely as the Lord lives, you will be safe and there will no problem. 20:22 But if I say to the boy, “Look, the arrows are on the other side of you,’ 6  get away. [30:14]  1 tn The Hebrew text adds “with fire.”

[8:18]  2 tc The LXX adds “because you have chosen for yourselves a king.”

[15:18]  3 tn Heb “journey.”

[15:18]  4 tc The translation follows the LXX, the Syriac Peshitta, and the Targum in reading the second person singular suffix (“you”) rather than the third person plural suffix of the MT (“they”).

[20:21]  5 tn Heb “from you and here.”

[20:22]  6 tn Heb “from you and onward.”

[20:23]  7 tc Heb “the Lord [is] between me and between you forever.” The translation assumes that the original text read עֵד עַד־עוֹלָם (’edad-olam), “a witness forever,” with the noun “a witness” accidentally falling out of the text by haplography. See P. K. McCarter, I Samuel (AB), 338.

[20:1]  8 tn Heb “and he came and said before Jonathan.”

[20:1]  9 tn Heb “What is my guilt?”

[18:17]  10 tc Much of the ms evidence for the LXX lacks vv. 17-19.

[18:17]  11 tn Heb “son of valor.”

[2:5]  12 tn Heb “Kerethites,” a people settled alongside the Philistines in the coastal areas of southern Palestine (cf. 1 Sam 30:14; Ezek 25:16). They originally came from the island of Crete.

[2:5]  13 tn Heb “Woe, inhabitants of the coast of the sea, nation of Kerethites.” The Hebrew term הוֹי (hoy, “ah, woe”), is used to mourn the dead and express outwardly one’s sorrow (see 1 Kgs 13:30; Jer 22:18; 34:5). By using it here the prophet mourns in advance the downfall of the Philistines, thereby emphasizing the certainty of their demise (“as good as dead”). Some argue the word does not have its earlier connotation here and is simply an attention-getting interjection, equivalent to “Hey!”

[2:5]  14 tn Heb “the word of the Lord is against you.”

[2:5]  15 tn Heb “I will destroy you so there is no inhabitant [remaining].”
