4:7 The Philistines were scared because they thought that gods had come to the camp. ¹  They said, “Too bad for ²  us! We’ve never seen anything like this!

7:13 So the Philistines were defeated; they did not invade Israel again. The hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

13:20 So all Israel had to go down to the Philistines in order to get their plowshares, cutting instruments, axes, and sickles ³  sharpened.

1 Samuel 17:51-52

17:51 David ran and stood over the Philistine. He grabbed Goliath’s ⁴  sword, drew it from its sheath, ⁵  killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they ran away.

17:52 Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward, shouting a battle cry. ⁶  They chased the Philistines to the valley ⁷  and to the very gates of Ekron. The Philistine corpses lay fallen along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.

[4:7]  ¹ tn The Hebrew text has a direct quote, “because they said, ‘Gods have come to the camp.’” Even though the verb translated “have come” is singular, the following subject should be taken as plural (“gods”), as v. 8 indicates. Some emend the verb to a plural form.

[4:7]  ² tn Traditionally “woe to.” They thought disaster was imminent.

[13:20]  ³ tc The translation follows the LXX (“their sickle”) here, rather than the MT “plowshares,” which is due to dittography from the word earlier in the verse.

[17:51]  ⁵ tn Heb “his”; the referent (Goliath) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[17:51]  ⁶ tc Most LXX mss lack the words “drew it from its sheath.”

[17:52]  ⁷ tn Heb “arose and cried out.”
