9:20 Don’t be concerned ¹  about the donkeys that you lost three days ago, for they have been found. Whom does all Israel desire? Is it not you, and all your father’s family?” ² 

1 Samuel 30:12-13

30:12 They gave him a slice of pressed figs and two bunches of raisins to eat. This greatly refreshed him, ³  for he had not eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights. 30:13 David said to him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?” The young man said, “I am an Egyptian, the servant of an Amalekite man. My master abandoned me when I was ill for three days.

20:19 On the third day ⁴  you should go down quickly ⁵  and come to the place where you hid yourself the day this all started. ⁶  Stay near the stone Ezel.

1 Samuel 21:5

21:5 David said to the priest, “Certainly women have been kept away from us, just as on previous occasions when I have set out. The soldiers’ ⁷  equipment is holy, even on an ordinary journey. How much more so will they be holy today, along with their equipment!”

David Defeats the Amalekites

30:1 On the third day David and his men came to Ziklag. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They attacked Ziklag and burned it. ⁸

[9:20]  ² tn Heb “and all the house of your father.”

[30:12]  ³ tn Heb “his spirit returned to him.”

[20:19]  ⁵ tc Heb “you will do [something] a third time.” The translation assumes an emendation of the verb from שִׁלַּשְׁתָּ (shillashta, “to do a third time”) to שִׁלִּישִׁית (shillishit, “[on the] third [day]”).

[20:19]  ⁶ tn Heb “you must go down greatly.” See Judg 19:11 for the same idiom.

[20:19]  ⁷ tn Heb “on the day of the deed.” This probably refers to the incident recorded in 19:2.

[21:5]  ⁷ tn Heb “servants’.”

[30:1]  ⁹ tn The Hebrew text adds “with fire.”
