  Blest hour, when mortal man retires To hold communion with his God; To send to Heaven his warm desires, And listen to the sacred word. Blest hour, when God Himself draws nigh, Well pleased His people’s voice to hear; To hush the penitential sigh, And wipe away the mourner’s tear.   I see angels ascending, descending on a stairway from heaven to earth. At the top stands the Lord, God of Abr’ham. He is mighty.   Lo, God is here! let us adore, And own how dreadful is this place! Let all within us feel His power, And silent bow before His face. Lo, God is here! Whom day and night United choirs of angels sing; To Him, enthroned above all height, The hosts of Heaven their praises bring. Gladly the toys of earth we leave, Wealth, pleasure, fame, for Thee alone; To Thee our will, soul, flesh, we give, O take, O seal them for Thine own! Disdain, not, Lord, our meaner song, Who praise Thee with a faltering tongue. To Thee may all our thoughts arise A true and ceaseless sacrifice. Here from the font is poured Grace on each sinful child; The blest anointing of the Lord Brightens the once defiled.   Only begotten, Word of God eternal, Lord of Creation, merciful and mighty, List to Thy servants, when their tuneful voices Rise to Thy presence. Thus in our solemn Feast of Dedication, Graced with returning rites of due devotion, Ever Thy children, year by year rejoicing, Chant in Thy temple. This is Thy palace; here Thy presence-chamber; Here may Thy servants, at the mystic banquet, Daily adoring, take the Body broken, Drink of Thy chalice. Here for Thy children stands the holy laver, Fountain of pardon for the guilt of nature, Cleansed by whose water springs a race anointed, Liegemen of Jesus. Here in our sickness healing grace aboundeth, Light in our blindness, in our toil refreshment; Sin is forgiven, hope o’er fear prevaileth, Joy over sorrow. Hallowed this dwelling where the Lord abideth, This is none other than the gate of Heaven; Strangers and pilgrims, making homes eternal, Pass through its portals. Lord, we beseech Thee, as we throng Thy temple, By Thy past blessings, by Thy present bounty, Smile on Thy children, and with tender mercy, Hear our petitions. • [Gen 4:8] When Adam Fell

  When Adam fell, he quickly lost God’s image, which he once possessed: See all our nature since could boast In Cain, his first-born son, expressed! The sacrifice the Lord ordained In type of the Redeemer’s blood, Self-righteous reasoning Cain disdained, And thought his own first-fruits as good. Yet rage and envy filled his mind, When, with a fallen, downcast look, He saw his brother favor find, Who God’s appointed method took. By Cain’s own hand, good Abel died, Because the Lord approved his faith; And, when his blood for vengeance cried, He vainly thought to hide his death. Such was the wicked murderer Cain, And such by nature still are we, Until by grace we’re born again, Malicious, blind and proud, as he. Like him the way of grace we slight, And in our own devices trust; Call evil good, and darkness light, And hate and persecute the just. The saints, in every age and place, Have found this history fulfilled; The numbers all our thoughts surpass Of Abels, whom the Cains have killed! Thus Jesus fell—but O! His blood Far better things than Abel’s cries: Obtains His murderers peace with God, And gains them mansions in the skies.

  Across the sky the shades of night This New Year’s Eve are fleeting, We deck Thine altar, Lord, with light, In solemn worship meeting; And as the year’s last hours go by, We raise to Thee our earnest cry, Once more Thy love entreating. Before the cross subdued we bow, To Thee our prayers addressing, Recounting all Thy mercies now, And all our sins confessing; Beseeching Thee this coming year To keep us in Thy faith and fear And crown us with Thy blessing. And while we pray, we lift our eyes To dear ones gone before us, Safe home with thee in paradise, Whose peace descendeth o’er us; And beg of Thee, when life is past, To reunite us all at last With those who’ve gone before us. We gather up in this brief hour The memory of Thy mercies; Thy wondrous goodness, love and power Our grateful song rehearses; For Thou hast been our Strength and Stay In many a dark and dreary day Of sorrow and reverses. In many an hour when fear and dread, Like evil spells, have bound us And clouds were gathering overhead, Thy providence hath found us. In many a night when seas ran high, Thy gracious presence, drawing nigh, Hath made all calm around us.
