1:11 God said to Solomon, “Because you desire this, 1  and did not ask for riches, wealth, and honor, or for vengeance on your enemies, 2  and because you did not ask for long life, 3  but requested wisdom and discernment so you can make judicial decisions for my people over whom I have made you king,

25:18 King Joash of Israel sent this message back to King Amaziah of Judah, “A thorn bush in Lebanon sent this message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.’ Then a wild animal of Lebanon came by and trampled down the thorn bush. 4 

2 Chronicles 34:21

34:21 “Go, seek an oracle from 5  the Lord for me and those who remain in Israel and Judah. Find out about 6  the words of this scroll that has been discovered. For the Lord’s fury has been ignited against us, 7  because our ancestors 8  have not obeyed the word of the Lord by doing all that this scroll instructs!” 9

[1:11]  1 tn Heb “because this was in your heart.”

[1:11]  2 tn Heb “the life of those who hate you.”

[1:11]  3 tn Heb “many days.”

[25:18]  4 sn The thorn bush in the allegory is Judah. Amaziah’s success had deceived him into thinking he was on the same level as the major powers in the area (symbolized by the cedar). In reality he was not capable of withstanding an attack by a real military power such as Israel (symbolized by the wild animal).

[34:21]  7 tn Or “inquire of.”
