2 Chronicles 10:14

10:14 and followed the advice of the younger ones. He said, “My father imposed heavy demands on you; ¹  I will make them even heavier. ²  My father punished you with ordinary whips; I will punish you with whips that really sting your flesh.” ³ 

2 Chronicles 25:19

25:19 You defeated Edom ⁴  and it has gone to your head. ⁵  Gloat over your success, ⁶  but stay in your palace. Why bring calamity on yourself? Why bring down yourself and Judah along with you?” ⁷ 

[10:14]  ¹ tc The Hebrew text reads, “I will make heavy your yoke,” but many medieval Hebrew mss and other ancient textual witnesses have, “my father made heavy your yoke.”

[10:14]  ² tn Heb “but I will add to your yoke.”

[10:14]  ³ tn Heb “My father punished you with whips, but I [will punish you] with scorpions.” “Scorpions” might allude to some type of torture, but more likely it refers to a type of whip that inflicts an especially biting, painful wound.

[25:19]  ⁴ tn Heb “you say [to yourself], ‘look, you have defeated Edom.’”

[25:19]  ⁵ tn Heb “and your heart is lifted up.”

[25:19]  ⁶ tn Heb “to glorify.”

[25:19]  ⁷ tn Heb “Why get involved in calamity and fall, you and Judah with you?”
