2:10 Look, I will pay your servants who cut the timber 20,000 kors ¹  of ground wheat, 20,000 kors of barley, 120,000 gallons ²  of wine, and 120,000 gallons of olive oil.”

20:2 Messengers ³  arrived and reported to Jehoshaphat, “A huge army is attacking you from the other side of the Dead Sea, ⁴  from the direction of Edom. ⁵  Look, they are in Hazezon Tamar (that is, En Gedi).”

20:12 Our God, will you not judge them? For we are powerless against this huge army that attacks us! We don’t know what we should do; we look to you for help.” ⁶ 

[2:10]  ¹ sn As a unit of dry measure a kor was roughly equivalent to six bushels (about 220 liters).

[2:10]  ² tn Heb “20,000 baths” (also a second time later in this verse). A bath was a liquid measure roughly equivalent to six gallons (about 22 liters), so this was a quantity of about 120,000 gallons (440,000 liters).

[20:2]  ³ tn Heb “they”; the implied referent (messengers) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:2]  ⁴ tn Heb “the Sea”; in context (“from the direction of Edom”) this must refer to the Dead Sea, which has been specified in the translation for clarity (cf. NEB, NLT).

[20:2]  ⁵ tc Most Hebrew mss read “from Aram” (i.e., Syria), but this must be a corruption of “Edom,” which is the reading of the LXX and Vulgate.

[20:12]  ⁵ tn Heb “for [or “indeed”] upon you are our eyes.”
