[2:12]  1 tn Heb “who has given to David a wise son [who] knows discernment and insight, who will build a house for the Lord and house for his kingship.”

[6:18]  2 tn Heb “Indeed, can God really live with mankind on the earth?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Of course not,” the force of which is reflected in the translation “God does not really live with mankind on the earth.”

[14:1]  3 sn Beginning with 14:1, the verse numbers through 14:15 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 14:1 ET = 13:23 HT, 14:2 ET = 14:1 HT, 14:3 ET = 14:2 HT, etc., through 14:15 ET = 14:14 HT. Beginning with 15:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

[14:1]  4 tn Heb “lay down with his fathers.”

[14:1]  5 sn The phrase the City of David refers here to the fortress of Zion in Jerusalem, not to Bethlehem. See 2 Sam 5:7.

[14:1]  6 tn Heb “in his days.”

[14:7]  4 tn The words “the people of” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The Hebrew text uses the name “Judah” by metonymy for the people of Judah.

[14:7]  5 tn Heb “and we will surround [them] with wall[s] and towers, doors, and bars.”

[14:7]  6 tn Heb “sought.”

[14:7]  7 tn Heb “and he has given us rest all around.”

[14:7]  8 tn The words “the cities” are supplied in the translation for clarification and for stylistic reasons.

[16:9]  5 tn Or “for.”

[16:9]  6 tn Heb “the eyes of the Lord move quickly through all the earth.”

[16:9]  7 tn Heb “to strengthen himself with their heart, [the one] complete toward him.”

[23:13]  6 tn Heb “and she saw, and behold.”

[23:13]  7 tn Or “Conspiracy! Conspiracy!”

[23:20]  7 tn Heb “took.”

[26:21]  8 tn The precise meaning of בֵּית הַחָפְשִׁית (bet hakhafshiyt, “house of [?]”) is uncertain. NASB, NIV, NRSV all have “in a separate house”; NEB has “in his own house…relieved of all duties.” For a discussion of various proposals, see M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 166-67.

[32:4]  9 tn Heb “and they closed up all the springs and the stream that flows in the midst of the land.” Here אָרֶץ (’arets, “land”) does not refer to the entire land, but to a smaller region like a district.

[32:4]  10 tn Heb “land, saying.”

[34:8]  10 tn Heb “to purify the land and the house.”

[36:23]  11 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[36:23]  12 tn Heb “Whoever [is] among you from all his people – may the Lord his God [be] with him so that he may go up.”
