2 Chronicles 33:9

33:9 But Manasseh misled the people of 1  Judah and the residents of Jerusalem so that they sinned more than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed ahead of the Israelites.

Daniel 3:5-6

3:5 When you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, 2  trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must 3  bow down and pay homage to the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has erected. 3:6 Whoever does not bow down and pay homage will immediately 4  be thrown into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire!”

Daniel 3:15

3:15 Now if you are ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must bow down and pay homage to the statue that I had made. If you don’t pay homage to it, you will immediately be thrown into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire. Now, who is that god who can rescue you from my power?” 5

13:15 The second beast 6  was empowered 7  to give life 8  to the image of the first beast 9  so that it could speak, and could cause all those who did not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 13:16 He also caused 10  everyone (small and great, rich and poor, free and slave 11 ) to obtain a mark on their right hand or on their forehead. 13:17 Thus no one was allowed to buy 12  or sell things 13  unless he bore 14  the mark of the beast – that is, his name or his number. 15

17:5 On 16  her forehead was written a name, a mystery: 17  “Babylon the Great, the Mother of prostitutes and of the detestable things of the earth.” 17:6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of those who testified to Jesus. 18  I 19  was greatly astounded 20  when I saw her.

[33:9]  1 tn Heb “misled Judah.” The words “the people of” are supplied in the translation for clarity. The Hebrew text uses the name “Judah” here by metonymy for the people of Judah.

[3:5]  2 sn The word zither (Aramaic קִיתָרוֹס [qitaros]), and the words for harp (Aramaic פְּסַנְתֵּרִין [pÿsanterin]) and pipes (Aramaic סוּמְפֹּנְיָה [sumponÿyah]), are of Greek derivation. Though much has been made of this in terms of suggesting a date in the Hellenistic period for the writing of the book, it is not surprising that a few Greek cultural terms, all of them the names of musical instruments, should appear in this book. As a number of scholars have pointed out, the bigger surprise (if, in fact, the book is to be dated to the Hellenistic period) may be that there are so few Greek loanwords in Daniel.

[3:5]  3 tn The imperfect Aramaic verbs have here an injunctive nuance.

[3:6]  4 tn Aram “in that hour.”

[3:15]  5 tn Aram “hand.” So also in v. 17.

[13:15]  6 tn Grk “it”; the referent (the second beast) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[13:15]  7 tn Grk “it was given [permitted] to it [the second beast].”

[13:15]  8 tn Grk “breath,” but in context the point is that the image of the first beast is made to come to life and speak.

[13:17]  13 tn The word “things” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context. In the context of buying and selling, food could be primarily in view, but the more general “things” was used in the translation because the context is not specific.

[13:17]  14 tn Grk “except the one who had.”

[13:17]  15 tn Grk “his name or the number of his name.”

[17:5]  16 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[17:5]  17 tn Some translations consider the word μυστήριον (musthrion, “mystery”) a part of the name written (“Mystery Babylon the Great,” so KJV, NIV), but the gender of both ὄνομα (onoma, “name”) and μυστήριον are neuter, while the gender of “Babylon” is feminine. This strongly suggests that μυστήριον should be understood as an appositive to ὄνομα (“a name, i.e., a mystery”).

[17:6]  18 tn Or “of the witnesses to Jesus.” Here the genitive ᾿Ιησοῦ (Ihsou) is taken as an objective genitive; Jesus is the object of their testimony.

[17:6]  19 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[17:6]  20 tn Grk “I marveled a great marvel” (an idiom for great astonishment).
