[5:13]  1 tn Heb “like one were the trumpeters and the musicians, causing one voice to be heard, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, and while raising a voice with trumpets and with cymbals and with instruments of music, and while praising the Lord.”

[5:13]  2 tn Heb “and the house was filled with a cloud, the house of the Lord.”

[6:20]  3 tn Heb “so your eyes might be open toward this house night and day, toward the place about which you said, ‘My name will be there.’”

[6:20]  4 tn Heb “by listening to the prayer which your servant is praying concerning this place.”

[6:27]  5 tn The present translation understands כִּי (ki) in an emphatic or asseverative sense (“Certainly”). Other translation have “indeed” (NASB), “when” (NRSV), “so” (NEB), or leave the word untranslated (NIV).

[6:27]  6 tn Heb “the good way in which they should walk.”

[6:27]  7 tn Or “for an inheritance.”

[6:30]  7 tn The words “their sin” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied for clarification.

[6:30]  8 tn Heb “and act and give to each one according to all his ways because you know his heart.” In the Hebrew text vv. 28-30a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided up for stylistic reasons.

[6:30]  9 tn Heb “Indeed you know, you alone, the heart of all the sons of mankind.”

[7:14]  9 tn Heb “over whom my name is called.” The Hebrew idiom “call the name over” indicates ownership. See 2 Sam 12:28.

[7:14]  10 tn Heb “seek my face,” where “my face” is figurative for God’s presence and acceptance.

[7:14]  11 tn Heb “and turn from their sinful ways.”

[7:14]  12 tn Heb “hear.”

[7:14]  13 sn Here the phrase heal their land means restore the damage done by the drought, locusts and plague mentioned in v. 13.

[9:6]  11 tn Heb “the half was not told to me.”

[10:15]  13 tn Heb “because this turn of events was from God.”

[10:15]  14 tn Heb “so that the Lord might bring to pass his word which he spoke.”

[11:4]  15 tn Heb “for his thing is from me.”

[11:4]  16 tn Heb “and they heard the words of the Lord and returned from going against Jeroboam.”

[15:2]  17 tn Heb “went out before.”

[15:2]  18 tn Heb “when you are with him.”

[15:2]  19 tn Heb “he will allow himself to be found by you.”

[15:8]  19 tn Heb “strengthened himself.”

[15:8]  20 tn Heb “the porch of the Lord.”

[16:4]  21 tn Heb “and Ben Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of the armies which belonged to him against the cities of Israel.”

[16:4]  22 tn Heb “They struck down.”

[16:4]  23 sn In the parallel passage in 1 Kgs 15:20, this city’s name appears as Abel Beth Maacah. These appear to be variant names for the same place.

[20:9]  23 tn Heb “sword.”

[20:9]  24 tn Heb “for your name is in this house.” The “name” of the Lord sometimes designates the Lord himself, being indistinguishable from the proper name. In this case the temple is referred to as a “house” where the Lord himself can reside.

[20:9]  25 tn Or “so that you may.”

[20:20]  25 tn Heb “O Judah.” The words “you people of” are supplied in the translation for clarity. See the note on the word “Judah” in v. 15.

[20:20]  26 tn There is a wordplay in the Hebrew text. The Hiphil verb form הַאֲמִינוּ (haaminu, “trust”) and the Niphal form תֵאָמֵנוּ (teamenu, “you will be safe”) come from the same verbal root (אָמַן, ’aman).

[25:16]  27 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Amaziah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[25:16]  28 tn Heb “Stop yourself! Why should they strike you down?”

[25:16]  29 tn The verb יָעַץ (yaats, “has decided”) is from the same root as יוֹעֵץ (yoets, “counselor”) in v. 16 and עֵצָה (’etsah, “advice”) later in v. 16. The wordplay highlights the appropriate nature of the divine punishment. Amaziah rejected the counsel of God’s prophet; now he would be the victim of God’s “counsel.”

[35:22]  29 tn Heb “and Josiah did not turn his face from him.”

[35:22]  30 tn Heb “listen to.”
