6:20 Night and day may you watch over this temple, the place where you promised you would live. ¹  May you answer your servant’s prayer for this place. ²

6:26 “The time will come when ³  the skies ⁴  are shut up tightly and no rain falls because your people ⁵  sinned against you. When they direct their prayers toward this place, renew their allegiance to you, ⁶  and turn away from their sin because you punish ⁷  them,

6:32 “Foreigners, who do not belong to your people Israel, will come from a distant land because of your great reputation ⁸  and your ability to accomplish mighty deeds; ⁹  they will come and direct their prayers toward this temple.

2 Chronicles 20:9

20:9 ‘If disaster comes on us in the form of military attack, ¹⁰  judgment, plague, or famine, we will stand in front of this temple before you, for you are present in this temple. ¹¹  We will cry out to you for help in our distress, so that you will ¹²  hear and deliver us.’

[6:26]  ³ tn Heb “when.” In the Hebrew text vv. 26-27a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided into two sentences for stylistic reasons.

[6:26]  ⁷ tn The Hebrew text reads “because you answer them,” as if the verb is from עָנָה (’anah, “answer”). However, this reference to a divine answer is premature, since the next verse asks for God to intervene in mercy. It is better to revocalize the consonantal text as תְעַנֵּם (tÿ’annem, “you afflict them”), a Piel verb form from the homonym עָנָה (“afflict”).

[6:32]  ⁵ tn Heb “your great name.” The word “name” sometimes refers to one’s reputation or honor (thus the translation here, “your great reputation”).

[6:32]  ⁶ tn Heb “and your strong hand and your outstretched arm.”

[20:9]  ⁷ tn Heb “sword.”

[20:9]  ⁸ tn Heb “for your name is in this house.” The “name” of the Lord sometimes designates the Lord himself, being indistinguishable from the proper name. In this case the temple is referred to as a “house” where the Lord himself can reside.
