• [Psa 65:2] God Of Love, That Hearest Prayer

  God of love, that hearest prayer, Kindly for Thy people care, Who on Thee alone depend: Love us, save us to the end. Save us, in the prosperous hour, From the flattering tempter’s power, From his unsuspected wiles, From the world’s pernicious smiles. Cut off our dependence vain On the help of feeble man, Every arm of flesh remove; Stay us on Thy only love! Men of worldly, low design, Let not these Thy people join, Poison our simplicity, Drag us from our trust in Thee. Save us from the great and wise, Till they sink in their own eyes, Tamely to Thy yoke submit, Lay their honors at Thy feet. Never let the world break in; Fix a mighty gulf between: Keep us little and unknown, Prized and loved by God alone. Let us still to Thee look up, Thee, Thy Israel’s strength and hope; Nothing know, or seek, beside Jesus, and Him crucified.   Great King of nations, hear our prayer, While at Thy feet we fall, And humbly with united cry To Thee for mercy call; The guilt is ours, but grace is Thine, O turn us not away; But hear us from Thy lofty throne, And help us when we pray. Our fathers’ sins were manifold, And ours no less we own, Yet wondrously from age to age Thy goodness has been shown; When dangers, like a stormy sea, Beset our country round, To Thee we looked, to Thee we cried, And help in Thee was found.   Faint falls the gentle voice of prayer, In the wild sounds that fill the air, Yet, Lord, we know that voice is heard, Not less than if Thy throne it stirred. Thine ear, Thou tender One, is caught, If we but bend the knee in thought; No choral song that shakes the sky Floats farther than the Christian’s sigh. Not all the darkness of the land Can hide the lifted eye and hand; Nor need the clanging conflict cease, To make Thee hear our cries for peace.

• [Pro 15:29] O God, Who Didst Thy Will Unfold

  O God, who didst Thy will unfold In wondrous modes to saints of old, By dream, by oracle, or seer, Wilt Thou not still Thy people hear? What though no answering voice is heard! Thine oracles, the written Word, Counsel and guidance still impart, Responsive to the upright heart. What though no more by dreams is shown That future things to God are known; Enough the promises reveal: Wisdom and love the rest conceal. Faith asks no signal from the skies, To show that prayers accepted rise; Our Priest is in the holy place, And answers from the throne of grace. No need of prophets to inquire: The sun is risen; the stars retire; The Comforter is come, and sheds His holy unction on our heads. Lord, with this grace our hearts inspire; Answer our sacrifice by fire; And by Thy mighty acts declare Thou art the God Who heareth prayer.
