[1:2]  2 tn Heb “and he sent messengers and said to them.”

[1:2]  3 tn That is, “seek an oracle from.”

[1:2]  4 sn Apparently Baal Zebub refers to a local manifestation of the god Baal at the Philistine city of Ekron. The name appears to mean “Lord of the Flies,” but it may be a deliberate scribal corruption of Baal Zebul, “Baal, the Prince,” a title known from the Ugaritic texts. For further discussion and bibliography, see HALOT 261 s.v. זְבוּב בַּעַל and M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 25.

[3:14]  5 tn Traditionally “the Lord of hosts.”

[3:14]  6 tn Heb “before whom I stand.”

[3:14]  7 tn Heb “if I did not lift up the face of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah.”

[3:14]  8 tn Heb “I would not look at you or see you.”

[5:17]  9 tn Heb “and [if] not, may there be given to your servant a load [for] a pair of mules, earth.”

[5:17]  10 tn Heb “for your servant will not again make a burnt offering and sacrifice to other gods, only to the Lord.”

[6:11]  13 tn Heb “and the heart of the king of Syria was stirred up over this thing.”

[6:11]  14 tn Heb “servants.”

[6:11]  15 tn Heb “Will you not tell me who among us [is] for the king of Israel?” The sarcastic rhetorical question expresses the king’s suspicion.

[8:8]  17 tn The Hebrew text also has “in your hand.”

[8:8]  18 tn Heb “Inquire of the Lord through him, saying.”

[16:7]  21 tn Heb “son.” Both terms (“servant” and “son”) reflect Ahaz’s subordinate position as Tiglath-pileser’s subject.

[16:7]  22 tn Heb “hand, palm.”

[16:7]  23 tn Heb “who have arisen against.”

[19:20]  25 tn Heb “That which you prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.” The verb “I have heard” does not appear in the parallel passage in Isa 37:21, where אֲשֶׁר (’asher) probably has a causal sense, “because.”

[20:3]  29 tn Heb “walked before you.” For a helpful discussion of the background and meaning of this Hebrew idiom, see M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 254.

[20:3]  30 tn Heb “and with a complete heart.”

[20:3]  31 tn Heb “and that which is good in your eyes I have done.”

[20:3]  32 tn Heb “wept with great weeping.”
