Jehu Wipes Out Ahab’s Family

10:1 Ahab had seventy sons living in Samaria. 1  So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the leading officials of Jezreel and to the guardians of Ahab’s dynasty. This is what the letters said, 2 

2 Kings 14:6

14:6 But he did not execute the sons of the assassins. He obeyed the Lord’s commandment as recorded in the law scroll of Moses, 3  “Fathers must not be put to death for what their sons do, 4  and sons must not be put to death for what their fathers do. 5  A man must be put to death only for his own sin.” 6

19:3 “This is what Hezekiah says: 7  ‘This is a day of distress, insults, 8  and humiliation, 9  as when a baby is ready to leave the birth canal, but the mother lacks the strength to push it through. 10

[10:1]  2 tn Heb “to the officers of Jezreel, the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab, saying.” It is not certain why the officials of Jezreel would be in Samaria. They may have fled there after they heard what happened to Joram and before Jehu entered the city. They would have had time to flee while Jehu was pursuing Ahaziah.

[14:6]  3 tn Heb “as it is written in the scroll of the law of Moses which the Lord commanded, saying.”

[14:6]  4 tn Heb “on account of sons.”

[14:6]  5 tn Heb “on account of fathers.”

[14:6]  6 sn This law is recorded in Deut 24:16.

[19:3]  5 tn In the Hebrew text this verse begins with “they said to him.”
