2 Kings 23:2-3

Context
23:2 The king went up to the Lord’s temple, accompanied by all the people of Judah, all the residents of Jerusalem, the priests, and the prophets. All the people were there, from the youngest to the oldest. He read aloud 2  all the words of the scroll of the covenant that had been discovered in the Lord’s temple. 23:3 The king stood by the pillar and renewed 3  the covenant before the Lord, agreeing to follow 4  the Lord and to obey his commandments, laws, and rules with all his heart and being, 5  by carrying out the terms 6  of this covenant recorded on this scroll. All the people agreed to keep the covenant. 7

2 Kings 23:2

Context
23:2 The king went up to the Lord’s temple, accompanied by all the people of Judah, all the residents of Jerusalem, the priests, and the prophets. 2 Kings 15:12-15

Context
15:12 His assassination brought to fulfillment the Lord’s word to Jehu, 9  “Four generations of your descendants will rule over Israel.” 10  That is exactly what happened. 11

15:13 Shallum son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of King Uzziah’s 12  reign over Judah. He reigned for one month 13  in Samaria. 15:14 Menahem son of Gadi went up from Tirzah to 14  Samaria and attacked Shallum son of Jabesh. 15  He killed him and took his place as king. 15:15 The rest of the events of Shallum’s reign, including the conspiracy he organized, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel. 16

2 Kings 23:16

Context
23:16 When Josiah turned around, he saw the tombs there on the hill. So he ordered the bones from the tombs to be brought; 17  he burned them on the altar and defiled it. This fulfilled the Lord’s announcement made by the prophet while Jeroboam stood by the altar during a festival. King Josiah 18  turned and saw the grave of the prophet who had foretold this. 19

2 Kings 1:10

Context
1:10 Elijah replied to the captain, 20  “If I am indeed a prophet, may fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty soldiers!” Fire then came down 21  from the sky and consumed him and his fifty soldiers.

[11:17]  1 tn Heb “and Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and [between] the king and [between] the people, to become a people for the Lord, and between the king and [between] the people.” The final words of the verse (“and between the king and [between] the people”) are probably accidentally repeated from earlier in the verse. They do not appear in the parallel account in 2 Chr 23:16. If retained, they probably point to an agreement governing how the king and people should relate to one another.

[23:2]  2 tn Heb “read in their ears.”

[23:3]  3 tn Heb “cut,” that is, “made, agreed to.”

[23:3]  4 tn Heb “walk after.”

[23:3]  5 tn Or “soul.”

[23:3]  6 tn Heb “words.”

[23:3]  7 tn Heb “stood in the covenant.”

[23:2]  8 tn Heb “read in their ears.”

[15:12]  9 tn Heb “It was the word of the Lord which he spoke to Jehu, saying.”

[15:12]  10 tn “sons of four generations will sit for you on the throne of Israel.”

[15:12]  11 tn Heb “and it was so.”

[15:13]  12 sn Azariah was also known by the name Uzziah.

[15:13]  13 tn Heb “a month of days.”

[15:14]  14 tn Heb “and came to.”

[15:14]  15 tn Heb “went up from Tirzah and arrived in Samaria and attacked Shallum son of Jabesh in Samaria.”

[15:15]  16 tn Heb “As for the rest of the events of Shallum, and his conspiracy which he conspired, look, they are written on the scroll of the events of the days of the kings of Israel.”

[23:16]  17 tn Heb “and he sent and took the bones from the tombs.”

[23:16]  18 tn Heb “the king”; this has been specified as “King Josiah” in the translation for clarity (cf. TEV, CEV, NLT).

[23:16]  19 tc The MT is much shorter than this. It reads, “according to the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.” The LXX has a much longer text at this point. It reads: “[which was proclaimed by the man of God] while Jeroboam stood by the altar at a celebration. Then he turned and saw the grave of the man of God [who proclaimed these words].” The extra material attested in the LXX was probably accidentally omitted in the Hebrew tradition when a scribe’s eye jumped from the first occurrence of the phrase “man of God” (which appears right before the extra material) and the second occurrence of the phrase (which appears at the end of the extra material).

[1:10]  20 tn Heb “answered and said to the officer of fifty.”

[1:10]  21 tn Wordplay contributes to the irony here. The king tells Elijah to “come down” (Hebrew יָרַד, yarad), but Elijah calls fire down (יָרַד) on the arrogant king’s officer.

[1:1]  22 sn This statement may fit better with the final paragraph of 1 Kgs 22.

[9:38]  23 sn Beginning with 9:38, the verse numbers through 10:39 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 9:38 ET = 10:1 HT, 10:1 ET = 10:2 HT, 10:2 ET = 10:3 HT, etc., through 10:39 ET = 10:40 HT. Beginning with 11:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.

[9:38]  24 tn Heb “we are cutting.”

[9:38]  25 tn Heb “and writing.”

[9:38]  26 tn Heb “our leaders, our Levites, and our priests on the sealed document.” The Hebrew text is elliptical here; the words “have affixed their names” are supplied in the translation for clarity and for stylistic reasons. Cf. v. 2.

[10:1]  27 tn The words “were the following names” are not in the Hebrew text but have been supplied in the translation for clarity. Cf. vv. 9, 10, 14.

[10:9]  28 tc With many medieval Hebrew manuscripts and the ancient versions the translation reads יְשׁוּעַ (yÿshua’, “Jeshua”) rather than the reading וְיֵשׁוּעַ (vÿyeshua’, “and Jeshua”) of BHS.

[10:10]  29 tn Heb “brothers” (also in v. 30).

[10:14]  30 tn Heb “heads”; ASV “chiefs.”
