15:29 During Pekah’s reign over Israel, King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, 1  Gilead, and Galilee, including all the territory of Naphtali. He deported the people 2  to Assyria.

2 Kings 23:8

Context

23:8 He brought all the priests from the cities of Judah and ruined 3  the high places where the priests had offered sacrifices, from Geba to Beer Sheba. 4  He tore down the high place of the goat idols 5  situated at the entrance of the gate of Joshua, the city official, on the left side of the city gate.

2 Kings 23:24

Context

23:24 Josiah also got rid of 6  the ritual pits used to conjure up spirits, 7  the magicians, personal idols, disgusting images, 8  and all the detestable idols that had appeared in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. In this way he carried out the terms of the law 9  recorded on the scroll that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the Lord’s temple.

25:23 All of the officers of the Judahite army 10  and their troops heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah to govern. So they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. The officers who came were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite.

[23:8]  5 tc The Hebrew text reads “the high places of the gates,” which is problematic in that the rest of the verse speaks of a specific gate. The translation assumes an emendation to בָּמוֹת הַשְּׁעָרִים (bamot hashÿarim), “the high place of the goats” (that is, goat idols). [23:24]  5 tn Here בִּעֵר (bier) is not the well attested verb “burn,” but the less common homonym meaning “devastate, sweep away, remove.” See HALOT 146 s.v. בער.
