2 Kings 17:11

17:11 They burned incense on all the high places just like the nations whom the Lord had driven away from before them. Their evil practices made the Lord angry. ¹

17:20 So the Lord rejected all of Israel’s descendants; he humiliated ²  them and handed them over to robbers, until he had thrown them from his presence.

18:5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; in this regard there was none like him among the kings of Judah either before or after. ³

18:35 Who among all the gods of the lands has rescued their lands from my power? So how can the Lord rescue Jerusalem from my power?’” ⁴

21:21 He followed in the footsteps of his father ⁵  and worshiped and bowed down to the disgusting idols ⁶  which his father had worshiped. ⁷

22:2 He did what the Lord approved ⁸  and followed in his ancestor David’s footsteps; ⁹  he did not deviate to the right or the left.

2 Kings 22:17

22:17 This will happen because they have abandoned me and offered sacrifices ¹⁰  to other gods, angering me with all the idols they have made. ¹¹  My anger will ignite against this place and will not be extinguished!’”

[17:11]  ¹ tn Heb “and they did evil things, angering the Lord.”

[17:20]  ² tn Or “afflicted.”

[18:5]  ³ tn Heb “and after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, and those who were before him.”

[18:35]  ⁴ tn Heb “that the Lord might rescue Jerusalem from my hand?” The logic runs as follows: Since no god has ever been able to withstand the Assyrian onslaught, how can the people of Jerusalem possibly think the Lord will rescue them?

[22:17]  ⁸ tn Heb “angering me with all the work of their hands.” The translation assumes that this refers to idols they have manufactured (note the preceding reference to “other gods,” as well as 19:18). However, it is possible that this is a general reference to their sinful practices, in which case one might translate, “angering me by all the things they do.”
