Elisha Helps a Widow and Her Sons

4:1 Now a wife of one of the prophets ¹⁰  appealed ¹¹  to Elisha for help, saying, “Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the Lord. ¹²  Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.”

2 Kings 7:12

7:12 The king got up in the night and said to his advisers, ¹³  “I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know we are starving, so they left the camp and hid in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and enter the city.’”

His reply suggests that the man said nothing of importance. The translation seeks to bring out the tone and intent of Jehu’s reply.

[4:1]  ⁷ tn Heb “your servant feared the Lord.” “Fear” refers here to obedience and allegiance, the products of healthy respect for the Lord’s authority.
