[2:11]  1 tn Though the noun is singular here, it may be collective, in which case it could be translated “chariots.”

[2:11]  2 tn Heb “look, a chariot of fire and horses of fire.”

[2:11]  3 tn Heb “and they made a division between the two of them.”

[2:15]  4 map For location see Map5 B2; Map6 E1; Map7 E1; Map8 E3; Map10 A2; Map11 A1.

[2:15]  5 tn Heb “and the sons of the prophets who were in Jericho, [who were standing] opposite, saw him and said.”

[2:15]  6 tn Heb “the spirit of Elijah.”

[4:7]  7 tn Heb “man of God” (also in vv. 16, 22, 25, 27 [twice]).

[4:8]  10 tn Heb “great,” perhaps “wealthy.”

[4:8]  11 tn Or “she urged him to eat some food.”

[4:8]  12 tn Or “he would turn aside there to eat some food.”

[4:31]  13 tn Heb “to meet him.”

[4:40]  16 tn Heb “and they poured out [the stew].” The plural subject is probably indefinite.

[6:30]  19 tn Heb “the people saw, and look, [there was] sackcloth against his skin underneath.”

[8:15]  22 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Hazael) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:15]  23 tn Heb “his”; the referent (Ben Hadad) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:22]  25 tn Heb “How [can there be] peace as long as the adulterous acts of Jezebel your mother and her many acts of sorcery [continue]?” In this instance “adulterous acts” is employed metaphorically for idolatry. As elsewhere in the OT, worshiping other gods is viewed as spiritual adultery and unfaithfulness to the one true God. The phrase “many acts of sorcery” could be taken literally, for Jezebel undoubtedly utilized pagan divination practices, but the phrase may be metaphorical, pointing to her devotion to pagan customs in general.

[17:7]  28 tn Heb “and from under the hand of.” The words “freed them” are added in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[17:7]  29 tn Heb “feared.”

[19:35]  31 tn This refers to the Israelites and/or the rest of the Assyrian army.

[19:35]  32 tn Heb “look, all of them were dead bodies.”
