Jehu Wipes Out Ahab’s Family

10:1 Ahab had seventy sons living in Samaria. ⁴  So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the leading officials of Jezreel and to the guardians of Ahab’s dynasty. This is what the letters said, ⁵ 

2 Kings 12:21

12:21 His servants Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer murdered him. ⁶  He was buried ⁷  with his ancestors in the city of David. His son Amaziah replaced him as king.

2 Kings 16:8

16:8 Then Ahaz took the silver and gold that were ⁸  in the Lord’s temple and in the treasuries of the royal palace and sent it as tribute ⁹  to the king of Assyria.

2 Kings 17:6

17:6 In the ninth year of Hoshea’s reign, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the people of Israel ¹⁰  to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, along the Habor (the river of Gozan), and in the cities of the Medes.

[2:14]  ¹ tn Heb “Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen off him.” The wording is changed slightly in the translation for the sake of variety of expression (see v. 13).

[7:16]  ² sn A seah was a dry measure equivalent to about 7 quarts.

[10:1]  ⁴ tn Heb “to the officers of Jezreel, the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab, saying.” It is not certain why the officials of Jezreel would be in Samaria. They may have fled there after they heard what happened to Joram and before Jehu entered the city. They would have had time to flee while Jehu was pursuing Ahaziah.
