Elisha Demonstrates His Authority

2:19 The men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, the city has a good location, as our ¹  master can see. But the water is bad and the land doesn’t produce crops.” ² 

2 Kings 7:7

7:7 So they got up and fled at dusk, leaving behind their tents, horses, and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

2 Kings 8:18-19

8:18 He followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab’s dynasty had done, for he married Ahab’s daughter. ³  He did evil in the sight of ⁴  the Lord. 8:19 But the Lord was unwilling to destroy Judah. He preserved Judah for the sake of ⁵  his servant David to whom he had promised a perpetual dynasty. ⁶ 

2 Kings 15:9

15:9 He did evil in the sight of ⁷  the Lord, as his ancestors had done. He did not repudiate ⁸  the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who encouraged Israel to sin.

[2:19]  ² tn Heb “miscarries” or “is barren.”

[8:18]  ³ tn Heb “he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab did, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife.”

[8:18]  ⁴ tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[8:19]  ⁵ tn The Hebrew has only one sentence, “and the Lord was unwilling to destroy Judah for the sake of.” The translation divides it for the sake of clarity.

[8:19]  ⁶ tn Heb “just as he had promised to give him and his sons a lamp all the days.” The metaphorical “lamp” symbolizes the Davidic dynasty; this is reflected in the translation.

[15:9]  ⁷ tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[15:9]  ⁸ tn Heb “turn away from.”
