2 Kings 22:19

22:19 ‘You displayed a sensitive spirit ¹  and humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard how I intended to make this place and its residents into an appalling example of an accursed people. ²  You tore your clothes and wept before me, and I have heard you,’ says the Lord.

Jeremiah 44:22

44:22 Finally the Lord could no longer endure your wicked deeds and the disgusting things you did. That is why your land has become the desolate, uninhabited ruin that it is today. That is why it has become a proverbial example used in curses. ³ 

Jeremiah 49:13

49:13 For I solemnly swear,” ⁴  says the Lord, “that Bozrah ⁵  will become a pile of ruins. It will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example to be used in curses. ⁶  All the towns around it will lie in ruins forever.”

Romans 9:3

9:3 For I could wish ⁷  that I myself were accursed – cut off from Christ – for the sake of my people, ⁸  my fellow countrymen, ⁹ 

[22:19]  ¹ tn Heb “Because your heart was tender.”

[22:19]  ² tn Heb “how I said concerning this place and its residents to become [an object of] horror and [an example of] a curse.” The final phrase (“horror and a curse”) refers to Judah becoming a prime example of an accursed people. In curse formulations they would be held up as a prime example of divine judgment. For an example of such a curse, see Jer 29:22.

[44:22]  ³ tn Heb “And/Then the Lord could no longer endure because of the evil of your deeds [and] because of the detestable things that you did and [or so] your land became a desolation and a waste and an occasion of a curse without inhabitant as this day.” The sentence has been broken up and restructured to better conform with contemporary English style, but an attempt has been made to preserve the causal and consequential connections.

[49:13]  ⁵ sn Bozrah appears to have been the chief city in Edom, its capital city (see its parallelism with Edom in Isa 34:6; 63:1; Jer 49:22). The reference to “its towns” (translated here “all the towns around it”) could then be a reference to all the towns in Edom. It was located about twenty-five miles southeast of the southern end of the Dead Sea apparently in the district of Teman (see the parallelism in Amos 1:12).

[9:3]  ⁷ tn Or “For I would pray.” The implied condition is “if this could save my fellow Jews.”
