2 Kings 4:1

Context
Elisha Helps a Widow and Her Sons

4:1 Now a wife of one of the prophets 1  appealed 2  to Elisha for help, saying, “Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the Lord. 3  Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.”

2 Kings 4:38

Context
Elisha Makes a Meal Edible

4:38 Now Elisha went back to Gilgal, while there was famine in the land. Some of the prophets were visiting him 4  and he told his servant, “Put the big pot on the fire 5  and boil some stew for the prophets.” 6

2 Kings 9:25

9:25 Jehu ordered 7  his officer Bidkar, “Pick him up and throw him into the part of the field that once belonged to Naboth of Jezreel. Remember, you and I were riding together behind his father Ahab, when the Lord pronounced this judgment on him,

2 Kings 12:4

12:4 Jehoash said to the priests, “I place at your disposal 8  all the consecrated silver that has been brought to the Lord’s temple, including the silver collected from the census tax, 9  the silver received from those who have made vows, 10  and all the silver that people have voluntarily contributed to the Lord’s temple. 11

2 Kings 13:21

Context
13:21 One day some men 12  were burying a man when they spotted 13  a raiding party. So they threw the dead man 14  into Elisha’s tomb. When the body 15  touched Elisha’s bones, the dead man 16  came to life and stood on his feet.

2 Kings 23:16

23:16 When Josiah turned around, he saw the tombs there on the hill. So he ordered the bones from the tombs to be brought; 17  he burned them on the altar and defiled it. [4:1]  1 tn Heb “a wife from among the wives of the sons of the prophets.”

[4:1]  2 tn Or “cried out.”

[4:1]  3 tn Heb “your servant feared the Lord.” “Fear” refers here to obedience and allegiance, the products of healthy respect for the Lord’s authority.

[4:38]  4 tn Heb “the sons of the prophets were sitting before him.”

[4:38]  5 tn The words “the fire” are added for clarification.

[4:38]  6 tn Heb “sons of the prophets.”

[9:25]  7 tn Heb “said to.”

[12:4]  10 tn The words “I place at your disposal” are added in the translation for clarification.

[12:4]  11 tn Heb “the silver of passing over a man.” The precise meaning of the phrase is debated, but עָבַר (’avar), “pass over,” probably refers here to counting, suggesting the reference is to a census conducted for taxation purposes. See M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 137.

[12:4]  12 tn Heb “the silver of persons, his valuation.” The precise meaning of the phrase is uncertain, but parallels in Lev 27 suggest that personal vows are referred to here. See M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 137.

[12:4]  13 tn Heb “all the silver which goes up on the heart of a man to bring to the house of the Lord.”

[13:21]  13 tn Heb “and it so happened [that] they.”

[13:21]  14 tn Heb “and look, they saw.”

[13:21]  15 tn Heb “the man”; the adjective “dead” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[13:21]  16 tn Heb “the man.”

[13:21]  17 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the dead man) has been specified in the translation for clarity. Otherwise the reader might think it was Elisha rather than the unnamed dead man who came back to life.

[23:16]  16 tn Heb “and he sent and took the bones from the tombs.”

[23:16]  17 tn Heb “the king”; this has been specified as “King Josiah” in the translation for clarity (cf. TEV, CEV, NLT).

[23:16]  18 tc The MT is much shorter than this. It reads, “according to the word of the Lord which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.” The LXX has a much longer text at this point. It reads: “[which was proclaimed by the man of God] while Jeroboam stood by the altar at a celebration. Then he turned and saw the grave of the man of God [who proclaimed these words].” The extra material attested in the LXX was probably accidentally omitted in the Hebrew tradition when a scribe’s eye jumped from the first occurrence of the phrase “man of God” (which appears right before the extra material) and the second occurrence of the phrase (which appears at the end of the extra material).
