2 Kings 9:21-27

Context
9:21 Jehoram ordered, “Hitch up my chariot.” 4  When his chariot had been hitched up, 5  King Jehoram of Israel and King Ahaziah of Judah went out in their respective chariots 6  to meet Jehu. They met up with him 7  in the plot of land that had once belonged to Naboth of Jezreel.

9:22 When Jehoram saw Jehu, he asked, “Is everything all right, Jehu?” He replied, “How can everything be all right as long as your mother Jezebel promotes idolatry and pagan practices?” 8  9:23 Jehoram turned his chariot around and took off. 9  He said to Ahaziah, “It’s a trap, 10  Ahaziah!” 9:24 Jehu aimed his bow and shot an arrow right between Jehoram’s shoulders. 11  The arrow went through 12  his heart and he fell to his knees in his chariot. 9:25 Jehu ordered 13  his officer Bidkar, “Pick him up and throw him into the part of the field that once belonged to Naboth of Jezreel. Remember, you and I were riding together behind his father Ahab, when the Lord pronounced this judgment on him, 9:26 ‘“Know for sure that I saw the shed blood of Naboth and his sons yesterday,” says the Lord, “and that I will give you what you deserve right here in this plot of land,” 14  says the Lord.’ So now pick him up and throw him into this plot of land, just as the Lord said.” 15

9:27 When King Ahaziah of Judah saw what happened, he took off 16  up the road to Beth Haggan. Jehu chased him and ordered, “Shoot him too.” They shot him while he was driving his chariot up the ascent of Gur near Ibleam. 17  He fled to Megiddo 18  and died there.

2 Kings 22:1-10

Context
Josiah Repents

22:1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 21  His mother 22  was Jedidah, daughter of Adaiah, from Bozkath. 22:2 He did what the Lord approved 23  and followed in his ancestor David’s footsteps; 24  he did not deviate to the right or the left.

22:3 In the eighteenth year of King Josiah’s reign, the king sent the scribe Shaphan son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, to the Lord’s temple with these orders: 25  22:4 “Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him melt down 26  the silver that has been brought by the people to the Lord’s temple and has been collected by the guards at the door. 22:5 Have them hand it over to the construction foremen 27  assigned to the Lord’s temple. They in turn should pay the temple workers to repair it, 28  22:6 including craftsmen, builders, and masons, and should buy wood and chiseled stone for the repair work. 29  22:7 Do not audit the foremen who disburse the silver, for they are honest.” 30

22:8 Hilkiah the high priest informed Shaphan the scribe, “I found the law scroll in the Lord’s temple.” Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan and he read it. 22:9 Shaphan the scribe went to the king and reported, 31  “Your servants melted down the silver in the temple 32  and handed it over to the construction foremen assigned to the Lord’s temple.” 22:10 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.” Shaphan read it out loud before the king.

[8:24]  1 tn Heb “lay down with his fathers.”

[8:29]  2 tn Heb “which the Syrians inflicted [on] him.”

[8:29]  3 tn Heb “to see.”

[9:21]  4 tn The words “my chariot” are added for clarification.

[9:21]  5 tn Heb “and he hitched up his chariot.”

[9:21]  6 tn Heb “each in his chariot and they went out.”

[9:21]  7 tn Heb “they found him.”

[9:22]  8 tn Heb “How [can there be] peace as long as the adulterous acts of Jezebel your mother and her many acts of sorcery [continue]?” In this instance “adulterous acts” is employed metaphorically for idolatry. As elsewhere in the OT, worshiping other gods is viewed as spiritual adultery and unfaithfulness to the one true God. The phrase “many acts of sorcery” could be taken literally, for Jezebel undoubtedly utilized pagan divination practices, but the phrase may be metaphorical, pointing to her devotion to pagan customs in general.

[9:23]  9 tn Heb “and Jehoram turned his hands and fled.” The phrase “turned his hands” refers to how he would have pulled on the reins in order to make his horses turn around.

[9:23]  10 tn Heb “Deceit, Ahaziah.”

[9:24]  11 tn Heb “and Jehu filled his hand with the bow and he struck Jehoram between his shoulders.”

[9:24]  12 tn Heb “went out from.”

[9:25]  13 tn Heb “said to.”

[9:26]  14 tn Heb “and I will repay you in this plot of land.”

[9:26]  15 tn Heb “according to the word of the Lord.”

[9:27]  16 tn Heb “and Ahaziah king of Judah saw and fled.”

[9:27]  17 tn After Jehu’s order (“kill him too”), the MT has simply, “to the chariot in the ascent of Gur which is near Ibleam.” The main verb in the clause, “they shot him” (וַיִּכְהוּ, vayyikhhu), has been accidentally omitted by virtual haplography/homoioteleuton. Note that the immediately preceding form הַכֻּהוּ (hakkuhu), “shoot him,” ends with the same suffix.

[22:1]  22 tn Heb “the name of his mother.”

[22:2]  23 tn Heb “he did what was proper in the eyes of the Lord.”

[22:2]  24 tn Heb “and walked in all the way of David his father.”

[22:3]  25 tn Heb “with these orders, saying.”

[22:4]  26 tc The MT has וְיַתֵּם (vÿyattem), “and let them add up” (Hiphil of תָּמָם [tammam], “be complete”), but the appearance of הִתִּיכוּ (hitikhu), “they melted down” (Hiphil of נָתַךְ [natakh], “pour out”) in v. 9 suggests that the verb form should be emended to וְיַתֵּךְ (vÿyattekh), “and let him melt down” (a Hiphil of נָתַךְ [natakh]). For a discussion of this and other options see M. Cogan and H. Tadmor, II Kings (AB), 281.

[22:5]  27 tn Heb “doers of the work.”

[22:5]  28 tn Heb “and let them give it to the doers of the work who are in the house of the Lord to repair the damages to the house.”

[22:6]  29 tn Heb “and to buy wood and chiseled stone to repair the house.”

[22:7]  30 tn Heb “only the silver that is given into their hand should not be reckoned with them, for in faithfulness they are acting.”

[22:9]  31 tn Heb “returned the king a word and said.”

[22:9]  32 tn Heb “that was found in the house.”
