1:4 David inquired, “How were things going? ¹  Tell me!” He replied, “The people fled from the battle and many of them ²  fell dead. ³  Even Saul and his son Jonathan are dead!”

2 Samuel 10:18

10:18 The Arameans fled before Israel. David killed 700 Aramean charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers. ⁴  He also struck down Shobach, the general in command of the army, who died there.

2 Samuel 18:17

18:17 They took Absalom, threw him into a large pit in the forest, and stacked a huge pile of stones over him. In the meantime all the Israelite soldiers fled to their homes. ⁵

19:8 So the king got up and sat at the city gate. When all the people were informed that the king was sitting at the city gate, they ⁶  all came before him.

[10:18]  ⁴ tn Heb “horsemen” (so KJV, NASB, NCV, NRSV, NLT) but the Lucianic recension of the LXX reads “foot soldiers,” as does the parallel text in 1 Chr 19:18. Cf. NAB, NIV.

[18:17]  ⁷ tn Heb “and all Israel fled, each to his tent.” In this context this refers to the supporters of Absalom (see vv. 6-7, 16).

[19:8]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “all the people.”

[19:8]  ¹¹ tn The Hebrew text has simply “Israel” (see 18:16-17).

[19:8]  ¹² tn Heb “had fled, each to his tent.”
