David’s Final Words

23:1 These are the final words of David:

“The oracle of David son of Jesse,

the oracle of the man raised up as

the ruler chosen by the God of Jacob, ¹ 

Israel’s beloved ²  singer of songs:

Job 31:40

31:40 then let thorns sprout up in place of wheat,

and in place of barley, weeds!” ³ 

The words of Job are ended.

Jeremiah 51:64

51:64 Then say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again because of the judgments ⁴  I am ready to bring upon her; they will grow faint.’”

Luke 24:51

24:51 Now ⁶  during the blessing ⁷  he departed ⁸  and was taken up into heaven. ⁹

[31:40]  ³ tn The word בָּאְשָׁה (bo’shah, from בָּאַשׁ [ba’as, “to have a foul smell”]) must refer to foul smelling weeds.

[51:64]  ⁴ tn Or “disaster”; or “calamity.”

[51:64]  ⁵ sn The final chapter of the book of Jeremiah does not mention Jeremiah or record any of his prophecies.

[24:51]  ⁶ tn Grk “And it happened that while.” The introductory phrase ἐγένετο (egeneto, “it happened that”), common in Luke (69 times) and Acts (54 times), is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[24:51]  ⁹ tc The reference to the ascension (“and was taken up into heaven”) is lacking in א* D it sy^s, but it is found in Ì⁷⁵ and the rest of the ms tradition. The authenticity of the statement here seems to be presupposed in Acts 1:2, for otherwise it is difficult to account for Luke’s reference to the ascension there.
