2 Samuel 3:8

Context

3:8 These words of Ish-bosheth really angered Abner and he said, “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah? This very day I am demonstrating 1  loyalty to the house of Saul your father and to his relatives 2  and his friends! I have not betrayed you into the hand of David. Yet you have accused me of sinning with this woman today! 3

12:18 On the seventh day the child died. But the servants of David were afraid to inform him that the child had died, for they said, “While the child was still alive he would not listen to us 4  when we spoke to him. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He will do himself harm!” 5

18:12 The man replied to Joab, “Even if 6  I were receiving 7  a thousand pieces of silver, 8  I would not strike 9  the king’s son! In our very presence 10  the king gave this order to you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.’ 11

19:43 The men of Israel replied to the men of Judah, “We have ten shares in the king, and we have a greater claim on David than you do! Why do you want 12  to curse us? Weren’t we the first to suggest bringing back our king?” But the comments of the men of Judah were more severe than those of the men of Israel.

[3:8]  2 tn Heb “brothers.”

[3:8]  3 tn Heb “and you have laid upon me the guilt of the woman today.”

[12:18]  4 tn Heb “to our voice.”

[12:18]  5 tn Heb “he will do harm.” The object is not stated in the Hebrew text. The statement may be intentionally vague, meaning that he might harm himself or them!

[18:12]  7 tc The translation follows the Qere and many medieval Hebrew mss in reading וְלוּ (vÿlu, “and if”) rather than MT וְלֹא (vÿlo’, “and not”).

[18:12]  8 tn Heb “weighing out in my hand.”

[18:12]  9 tn Heb “a thousand [shekels] of silver.” This would have been about 25 pounds (11.4 kg) of silver by weight.

[18:12]  10 tn Heb “extend my hand against.”

[18:12]  11 tn Heb “in our ears.”

[18:12]  12 tc The Hebrew text is very difficult here. The MT reads מִי (mi, “who”), apparently yielding the following sense: “Show care, whoever you might be, for the youth Absalom.” The Syriac Peshitta reads li (“for me”), the Hebrew counterpart of which may also lie behind the LXX rendering μοι (moi, “for me”). This reading seems preferable here, since it restores sense to the passage and most easily explains the rise of the variant.

[19:43]  10 tn The translation understands the verb in a desiderative sense, indicating the desire but not necessarily the completed action of the party in question. It is possible, however, that the verb should be given the more common sense of accomplished action, in which case it means here “Why have you cursed us?”
