Encouragement in Persecution

1:5 This is evidence of God’s righteous judgment, to make you worthy ¹  of the kingdom of God, for which in fact you are suffering.

Joshua Sends Spies into the Land

2:1 Joshua son of Nun sent two spies out from Shittim secretly and instructed them: ⁵  “Find out what you can about the land, especially Jericho.” ⁶  They stopped at the house of a prostitute named Rahab and spent the night there. ⁷

17:18 The whole hill country ⁸  will be yours; though it is a forest, you can clear it and it will be entirely yours. ⁹  You can conquer the Canaanites, though they have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels and are strong.”

[1:5]  ¹ tn Grk “so that you may be made worthy.” The passive infinitive καταξιωθῆναι (kataxiwqhnai) has been translated as an active construction in English for stylistic reasons.
