Acts 26:16

Context
26:16 But get up and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this reason, to designate you in advance 1  as a servant and witness 2  to the things 3  you have seen 4  and to the things in which I will appear to you.

Romans 15:16

Context
15:16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I serve 5  the gospel of God 6  like a priest, so that the Gentiles may become an acceptable offering, 7  sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:7-8

Context
3:7 I became a servant of this gospel 8  according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by 9  the exercise of his power. 10  3:8 To me – less than the least of all the saints 11  – this grace was given, 12  to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ

Ephesians 4:11-12

Context
4:11 It was he 13  who gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 14  4:12 to equip 15  the saints for the work of ministry, that is, 16  to build up the body of Christ,

Colossians 1:23-25

Context
1:23 if indeed you remain in the faith, established and firm, 17  without shifting 18  from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has also been preached in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become its servant.

1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my physical body – for the sake of his body, the church – what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ. 1:25 I became a servant of the church according to the stewardship 19  from God – given to me for you – in order to complete 20  the word of God,

[26:16]  1 tn L&N 30.89 has “‘to choose in advance, to select beforehand, to designate in advance.’”

[26:16]  2 sn As a servant and witness. The commission is similar to Acts 1:8 and Luke 1:2. Paul was now an “eyewitness” of the Lord.

[26:16]  3 tn BDAG 719 s.v. ὁράω A.1.b states, “W. attraction of the relative ὧν = τούτων ἅ Lk 9:36; Ac 22:15. The attraction may be due to colloq. breviloquence in μάρτυρα ὧν τε εἶδες με ὧν τε ὀφθήσομαί σοι a witness to the things in which you saw me and to those in which I shall appear to you Ac 26:16b.”

[26:16]  4 tc ‡ Some mss read “of the things in which you have seen me.” The accusative object με (me, “me”) is found after εἶδές (eide") in B C*vid 614 945 1175 1505 1739 1891 2464 pc sy sa; it is lacking in Ì74 א A C2 E Ψ 096 Ï latt bo. The external evidence is relatively evenly divided, though there is a slight preference for the omission. NA27 includes the word in brackets, indicating some doubt as to its authenticity.

[15:16]  5 tn Grk “serving.” This is a continuation of the previous sentence in the Greek text, but in keeping with contemporary English style, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[15:16]  6 tn The genitive in the phrase τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ (to euangelion tou qeou, “the gospel of God”) could be translated as either a subjective genitive (“the gospel which God brings”) or an objective genitive (“the gospel about God”). Either is grammatically possible. This is possibly an instance of a plenary genitive (see ExSyn 119-21; M. Zerwick, Biblical Greek, §§36-39). If so, an interplay between the two concepts is intended: The gospel which God brings is in fact the gospel about himself.

[15:16]  7 tn Grk “so that the offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable.” This could be understood to refer to an offering belonging to the Gentiles (a possessive genitive) or made by the Gentiles (subjective genitive), but more likely the phrase should be understood as an appositive genitive, with the Gentiles themselves consisting of the offering (so J. D. G. Dunn, Romans [WBC 38], 2:860). The latter view is reflected in the translation “so that the Gentiles may become an acceptable offering.”

[3:7]  8 tn Grk “of which I was made a minister,” “of which I became a servant.”

[3:7]  9 tn Grk “according to.”

[3:7]  10 sn On the exercise of his power see 1:19-20.

[3:8]  11 sn In Pauline writings saints means any true believer. Thus for Paul to view himself as less than the least of all the saints is to view himself as the most unworthy object of Christ’s redemption.

[3:8]  12 sn The parallel phrases to proclaim and to enlighten which follow indicate why God’s grace was manifested to Paul. Grace was not something just to be received, but to be shared with others (cf. Acts 13:47).

[4:11]  13 tn The emphasis on Christ is continued through the use of the intensive pronoun, αὐτός (autos), and is rendered in English as “it was he” as this seems to lay emphasis on the “he.”

[4:11]  14 sn Some interpreters have understood the phrase pastors and teachers to refer to one and the same group. This would mean that all pastors are teachers and that all teachers are pastors. This position is often taken because it is recognized that both nouns (i.e., pastors and teachers) are governed by one article in Greek. But because the nouns are plural, it is extremely unlikely that they refer to the same group, but only that the author is linking them closely together. It is better to regard the pastors as a subset of teachers. In other words, all pastors are teachers, but not all teachers are pastors. See ExSyn 284.

[4:12]  15 tn On the translation of πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων (pro" ton katartismon twn Jagiwn) as “to equip the saints” see BDAG 526 s.v. καταρτισμός. In this case the genitive is taken as objective and the direct object of the verbal idea implied in καταρτισμός (katartismo").

[4:12]  16 tn The εἰς (eis) clause is taken as epexegetical to the previous εἰς clause, namely, εἰς ἔργον διακονίας (ei" ergon diakonia").

[1:23]  17 tn BDAG 276 s.v. ἑδραῖος suggests “firm, steadfast.”

[1:23]  18 tn BDAG 639 s.v. μετακινέω suggests “without shifting from the hope” here.

[1:25]  19 tn BDAG 697 s.v. οἰκονομία 1.b renders the term here as “divine office.”

[1:25]  20 tn See BDAG 828 s.v. πληρόω 3. The idea here seems to be that the apostle wants to “complete the word of God” in that he wants to preach it to every person in the known world (cf. Rom 15:19). See P. T. O’Brien, Colossians, Philemon (WBC), 82.
