11:18 When they heard this, ¹  they ceased their objections ²  and praised ³  God, saying, “So then, God has granted the repentance ⁴  that leads to life even to the Gentiles.” ⁵

25:8 Paul said in his defense, ⁶  “I have committed no offense ⁷  against the Jewish law ⁸  or against the temple or against Caesar.” ⁹ 

Acts 28:21

28:21 They replied, ¹⁰  “We have received no letters from Judea about you, nor have any of the brothers come from there ¹¹  and reported or said anything bad about you.

[11:18]  ² tn Or “became silent,” but this would create an apparent contradiction with the subsequent action of praising God. The point, in context, is that they ceased objecting to what Peter had done.

[11:18]  ⁴ sn Here the summary phrase for responding to the gospel is the repentance that leads to life. Note how the presence of life is tied to the presence of the Spirit (cf. John 4:7-42; 7:37-39).

[11:18]  ⁵ sn In the Greek text the phrase even to the Gentiles is in an emphatic position.

[25:8]  ⁶ tn Grk “Paul saying in his defense”; the participle ἀπολογουμένου (apologoumenou) could be taken temporally (“when Paul said…”), but due to the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, the participle was translated as a finite verb and a new sentence begun here in the translation. BDAG 116-17 s.v. ἀπολογέομαι has “W. ὅτι foll. τοῦ Παύλου ἀπολογουμένου, ὅτι when Paul said in his defense (direct quot. foll.) Ac 25:8.”

[25:8]  ⁷ tn Grk “I have sinned…in nothing.”

[25:8]  ⁸ tn Grk “against the law of the Jews.” Here τῶν ᾿Ιουδαίων has been translated as an attributive genitive.

[25:8]  ⁹ tn Or “against the emperor” (“Caesar” is a title for the Roman emperor).

[28:21]  ¹¹ tn Grk “they said to him.”

[28:21]  ¹² tn Or “arrived”; Grk “come” (“from there” is implied). Grk “coming.” The participle παραγενόμενος (paragenomeno") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
