Paul is Shipwrecked

27:39 When day came, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed ¹²  a bay ¹³  with a beach, ¹⁴  where they decided to run the ship aground if they could.

[12:6]  ¹ tn Grk “was going to bring him out,” but the upcoming trial is implied. See Acts 12:4.

[12:6]  ² tn Grk “two chains, and.” Logically it makes better sense to translate this as a temporal clause, although technically it is a coordinate clause in Greek.

[12:6]  ³ tn Or “were guarding.”

[16:8]  ⁴ tn Although the normal meaning for παρέρχομαι (parercomai) is “pass by, go by,” it would be difficult to get to Troas from where Paul and his companions were without going through rather than around Mysia. BDAG 776 s.v. παρέρχομαι 6 list some nonbiblical examples of the meaning “go through, pass through,” and give that meaning for the usage here.

[16:8]  ⁵ sn Mysia was a province in northwest Asia Minor.

[16:8]  ⁶ sn Troas was a port city (and surrounding region) on the northwest coast of Asia Minor, near ancient Troy.

[17:31]  ⁷ tn Or “fixed.”

[17:31]  ⁸ sn The world refers to the whole inhabited earth.

[17:31]  ⁹ tn Or “appointed.” BDAG 723 s.v. ὁρίζω 2.b has “of persons appoint, designate, declare: God judges the world ἐν ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὥρισεν through a man whom he has appointed Ac 17:31.”

[17:31]  ¹⁰ tn The participle ἀναστήσας (anasthsa") indicates means here.

[19:4]  ¹⁰ sn These disciples may have had their contact with John early on in the Baptist’s ministry before Jesus had emerged. This is the fifth time Luke links John the Baptist and Jesus (Acts 1:5; 11:16; 13:25; 18:25).

[27:39]  ¹³ tn Or “observed,” “saw.”

[27:39]  ¹⁴ tn Or “gulf” (BDAG 557 s.v. κόλπος 3).

[27:39]  ¹⁵ sn A beach would refer to a smooth sandy beach suitable for landing.
