Acts 24:4

24:4 But so that I may not delay ¹  you any further, I beg ²  you to hear us briefly ³  with your customary graciousness. ⁴

5:4 Before it was sold, ⁵  did it not ⁶  belong to you? And when it was sold, was the money ⁷  not at your disposal? How have you thought up this deed in your heart? ⁸  You have not lied to people ⁹  but to God!”

Acts 24:2

24:2 When Paul ¹⁰  had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, ¹¹  saying, “We have experienced a lengthy time ¹²  of peace through your rule, ¹³  and reforms ¹⁴  are being made in this nation ¹⁵  through your foresight. ¹⁶ 

[24:4]  ¹ tn Or “may not weary.” BDAG 274 s.v. ἐγκόπτω states, “ἵνα μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖόν σε ἐγκόπτω Ac 24:4 is understood by Syr. and Armen. versions to mean in order not to weary you any further; cp. ἔγκοπος weary Diog. L. 4, 50; LXX; and ἔγκοπον ποιεῖν to weary Job 19:2; Is 43:23. But impose on is also prob.; detain NRSV.”

[24:4]  ² tn Or “request.”

[24:4]  ³ tn This term is another NT hapax legomenon (BDAG 976 s.v. συντόμως 2). Tertullus was asking for a brief hearing, and implying to the governor that he would speak briefly and to the point.

[24:4]  ⁴ tn BDAG 371 s.v. ἐπιείκεια has “τῇ σῇ ἐ. with your (customary) indulgence Ac 24:4.”

[5:4]  ⁵ tn Grk “Remaining to you.”

[5:4]  ⁶ tn The negative interrogative particle οὐχί (ouci) expects a positive reply to this question and the following one (“And when it was sold, was it not at your disposal?”).

[5:4]  ⁷ tn Grk “it”; the referent of the pronoun (the money generated from the sale of the land) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[5:4]  ⁸ tn Grk “How is it that you have [or Why have you] placed this deed in your heart?” Both of these literal translations differ from the normal way of expressing the thought in English.

[5:4]  ⁹ tn Grk “to men.” If Peter’s remark refers only to the apostles, the translation “to men” would be appropriate. But if (as is likely) the action was taken to impress the entire congregation (who would presumably have witnessed the donation or been aware of it) then the more general “to people” is more appropriate, since the audience would have included both men and women.

[24:2]  ⁹ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Paul) has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[24:2]  ¹⁰ tn Or “began to bring charges, saying.”

[24:2]  ¹¹ tn Grk “experienced much peace.”

[24:2]  ¹² tn Grk “through you” (“rule” is implied).

[24:2]  ¹³ tn This term is used only once in the NT (a hapax legomenon). It refers to improvements in internal administration (BDAG 251 s.v. διόρθωμα).

[24:2]  ¹⁴ tn Or “being made for this people.”

[24:2]  ¹⁵ sn References to peaceful rule, reforms, and the governor’s foresight in the opening address by Tertullus represent an attempt to praise the governor and thus make him favorable to the case. Actual descriptions of his rule portray him as inept (Tacitus, Annals 12.54; Josephus, J. W. 2.13.2-7 [2.253-270]).
