Acts 25:18

25:18 When his accusers stood up, they did not charge ¹  him with any of the evil deeds I had suspected. ² 

Acts 23:30

23:30 When I was informed ³  there would be a plot ⁴  against this man, I sent him to you at once, also ordering his accusers to state their charges ⁵  against him before you.

Acts 23:35

23:35 he said, “I will give you a hearing ⁶  when your accusers arrive too.” Then ⁷  he ordered that Paul ⁸  be kept under guard in Herod’s palace. ⁹ 

Acts 25:16

25:16 I answered them ¹⁰  that it was not the custom of the Romans to hand over anyone ¹¹  before the accused had met his accusers face to face ¹²  and had been given ¹³  an opportunity to make a defense against the accusation. ¹⁴ 

[25:18]  ¹ tn Grk “they brought no charge of any of the evil deeds.” BDAG 31 s.v. αἰτία 3.b has “αἰτίαν φέρειν…bring an accusation Ac 25:18.” Since κατήγοροι (kathgoroi, “accusers”) in the previous clause is somewhat redundant with this, “charge” was used instead.

[25:18]  ² tn Or “I was expecting.”

[23:30]  ³ tn Grk “It being revealed to me.” The participle μηνυθείσης (mhnuqeish") has been taken temporally.

[23:30]  ⁴ tn The term translated “plot” here is a different one than the one in Acts 23:16 (see BDAG 368 s.v. ἐπιβουλή).

[23:30]  ⁵ tn Grk “the things against him.” This could be rendered as “accusations,” “grievances,” or “charges,” but since “ordered his accusers to state their accusations” sounds redundant in English, “charges” was used instead.

[23:35]  ⁵ tn Or “I will hear your case.” BDAG 231 s.v. διακούω has “as legal t.t. give someone an opportunity to be heard in court, give someone (τινός) a hearing Ac 23:35”; L&N 56.13 has “to give a judicial hearing in a legal matter – ‘to hear a case, to provide a legal hearing, to hear a case in court.’”

[23:35]  ⁶ tn Grk “ordering.” The participle κελεύσας (keleusas) has been translated as a finite verb and a new sentence begun here due to the length and complexity of the Greek sentence. “Then” has also been supplied to indicate the logical and temporal sequence.

[23:35]  ⁷ tn Grk “him”; the referent (Paul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[23:35]  ⁸ sn Herod’s palace (Grk “Herod’s praetorium”) was the palace built in Caesarea by Herod the Great. See Josephus, Ant. 15.9.6 (15.331). These events belong to the period of a.d. 56-57.

[25:16]  ⁷ tn Grk “to whom I answered.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, the relative pronoun (“whom”) has been replaced with a personal pronoun (“them”) and a new sentence started in the translation at the beginning of v. 16.

[25:16]  ⁸ tn Grk “any man.” This is a generic use of ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpos).

[25:16]  ⁹ tn Or “has met his accusers in person.”

[25:16]  ¹⁰ tn Grk “and receives.”

[25:16]  ¹¹ tn Or “indictment” (a legal technical term). BDAG 273-74 s.v. ἔγκλημα 1 states, “legal t.t.…ἀπολογία περὶ τοῦ ἐ. defense against the accusation Ac 25:16.” L&N 56.6 defines ἔγκλημα (enklhma) as “(a technical, legal term) a formal indictment or accusation brought against someone – ‘indictment, accusation, case.’ …‘and might receive an opportunity for a defense against the indictment’ Ac 25:16.”
