Acts 4:18

4:18 And they called them in and ordered ¹  them not to speak or teach at all in the name ²  of Jesus.

Acts 8:38

8:38 So he ordered the chariot to stop, and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, ³  and Philip baptized ⁴  him.

Acts 16:23

16:23 After they had beaten them severely, ⁵  they threw them into prison and commanded ⁶  the jailer to guard them securely.

[4:18]  ¹ tn Or “commanded.”

[4:18]  ² sn In the name of Jesus. Once again, the “name” reflects the person. The person of Jesus and his authority is the “troubling” topic that, as far as the Jewish leadership is concerned, needs controlling.

[8:38]  ³ tn Grk “and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch.” Since this is somewhat redundant in English, it was simplified to “and both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water.”

[8:38]  ⁴ sn Philip baptized. Again, someone beyond the Twelve has ministered an ordinance of faith.

[16:23]  ⁵ tn Grk “Having inflicted many blows on them.” The participle ἐπιθέντες (epiqente") has been taken temporally. BDAG 384 s.v. ἐπιτίθημι 1.a.β has “inflict blows upon someone” for this expression, but in this context it is simpler to translate in English as “they had beaten them severely.”

[16:23]  ⁶ tn Grk “commanding.” The participle παραγγείλαντες (parangeilante") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
