Acts 5:36

5:36 For some time ago ¹  Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He ²  was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and nothing came of it. ³

12:6 On that very night before Herod was going to bring him out for trial, ⁴  Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, while ⁵  guards in front of the door were keeping watch ⁶  over the prison.

12:14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she did not open the gate, but ran back in and told ⁷  them ⁸  that Peter was standing at the gate.

Acts 23:15

23:15 So now you and the council ⁹  request the commanding officer ¹⁰  to bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine ¹¹  his case ¹²  by conducting a more thorough inquiry. ¹³  We are ready to kill him ¹⁴  before he comes near this place.” ¹⁵

[5:36]  ² tn Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was replaced by the pronoun “he,” and a new sentence was begun in the translation at this point.

[5:36]  ³ tn Grk “and they came to nothing.” Gamaliel’s argument is that these two insurrectionists were taken care of by natural events.

[12:6]  ⁴ tn Grk “was going to bring him out,” but the upcoming trial is implied. See Acts 12:4.

[12:6]  ⁵ tn Grk “two chains, and.” Logically it makes better sense to translate this as a temporal clause, although technically it is a coordinate clause in Greek.

[12:14]  ⁸ tn The word “them” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects in Greek were often omitted when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the modern English reader.

[23:15]  ¹² tn Or “decide.” BDAG 227 s.v. διαγινώσκω has “ἀκριβέστερον τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ to make a more thorough examination of his case Ac 23:15.”

[23:15]  ¹⁴ tn The expression “more thorough inquiry” reflects the comparative form of ἀκριβέστερον (akribesteron).

[23:15]  ¹⁵ sn “We are ready to kill him.” Now those Jews involved in the conspiracy, along with the leaders as accomplices, are going to break one of the ten commandments.
