The Conversion of Saul

9:1 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing out threats ¹  to murder ²  the Lord’s disciples, went to the high priest

22:27 So the commanding officer ³  came and asked ⁴  Paul, ⁵  “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” ⁶  He replied, ⁷  “Yes.”

22:26 When the centurion ⁸  heard this, ⁹  he went to the commanding officer ¹⁰  and reported it, ¹¹  saying, “What are you about to do? ¹²  For this man is a Roman citizen.” ¹³

[9:1]  ² tn The expression “breathing out threats and murder” is an idiomatic expression for “making threats to murder” (see L&N 33.293). Although the two terms “threats” and “murder” are syntactically coordinate, the second is semantically subordinate to the first. In other words, the content of the threats is to murder the disciples.
