Daniel 2:13

2:13 So a decree went out, and the wise men were about ¹  to be executed. They also sought ²  Daniel and his friends so that they could be executed.

5:30 And in that very night Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, ³  was killed. ⁴

2:14 Then Daniel spoke with prudent counsel ⁵  to Arioch, who was in charge of the king’s executioners and who had gone out to execute the wise men of Babylon.

3:22 But since the king’s command was so urgent, and the furnace was so excessively hot, the men who escorted ⁶  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were killed ⁷  by the leaping flames. ⁸ 

Daniel 7:11

7:11 “Then I kept on watching because of the arrogant words of the horn that was speaking. I was watching ⁹  until the beast was killed and its body destroyed and thrown into ¹⁰  the flaming fire.

Daniel 5:19

5:19 Due to the greatness that he bestowed on him, all peoples, nations, and language groups were trembling with fear ¹¹  before him. He killed whom he wished, he spared ¹²  whom he wished, he exalted whom he wished, and he brought low whom he wished.

[2:13]  ¹ tn The Aramaic participle is used here to express the imminent future.

[2:13]  ² tn The impersonal active plural (“they sought”) of the Aramaic verb could also be translated as an English passive: “Daniel and his friends were sought” (cf. NAB).

[5:30]  ³ tn Aram “king of the Chaldeans.”

[5:30]  ⁴ sn The year was 539 B.C. At this time Daniel would have been approximately eighty-one years old. The relevant extra-biblical records describing the fall of Babylon include portions of Herodotus, Xenophon, Berossus (cited in Josephus), the Cyrus Cylinder, and the Babylonian Chronicle.

[2:14]  ⁵ tn Aram “returned prudence and counsel.” The expression is a hendiadys.

[3:22]  ⁷ tn Aram “caused to go up.”

[3:22]  ⁸ tn The Aramaic verb is active.

[3:22]  ⁹ tn Aram “the flame of the fire” (so KJV, ASV, NASB); NRSV “the raging flames.”

[7:11]  ⁹ tc The LXX and Theodotion lack the words “I was watching” here. It is possible that these words in the MT are a dittography from the first part of the verse.

[7:11]  ¹⁰ tn Aram “and given over to” (so NRSV).

[5:19]  ¹¹ tn Aram “were trembling and fearing.” This can be treated as a hendiadys, “were trembling with fear.”

[5:19]  ¹² tn Aram “let live.” This Aramaic form is the aphel participle of חַיָה(khayah, “to live”). Theodotion and the Vulgate mistakenly take the form to be from מְחָא (mÿkha’, “to smite”).
