5:26 This is the interpretation of the words: ¹  As for mene ²  – God has numbered your kingdom’s days and brought it to an end.

Daniel 2:49

2:49 And at Daniel’s request, the king ³  appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the administration of the province of Babylon. Daniel himself served in the king’s court. ⁴ 

Daniel 2:24

2:24 Then Daniel went in to see ⁵  Arioch (whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon). He came ⁶  and said to him, “Don’t destroy the wise men of Babylon! Escort me ⁷  to the king, and I will disclose the interpretation to him!” ⁸ 

Daniel 3:12

3:12 But there are Jewish men whom you appointed over the administration of the province of Babylon – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – and these men ⁹  have not shown proper respect to you, O king. They don’t serve your gods and they don’t pay homage to the golden statue that you have erected.”

[5:26]  ² tn The Aramaic term מְנֵא (mÿne’) is a noun referring to a measure of weight. The linkage here to the verb “to number” (Aram. מְנָה, mÿnah) is a case of paronomasia rather than strict etymology. So also with תְּקֵל (tÿqel) and פַרְסִין (farsin). In the latter case there is an obvious wordplay with the name “Persian.”

[2:49]  ³ tn Aram “and Daniel sought from the king and he appointed.”

[2:49]  ⁴ tn Aram “was at the gate of the king.”

[2:24]  ⁵ tc The MT has עַל עַל (’al ’al, “he entered upon”). Several medieval Hebrew MSS lack the verb, although this may be due to haplography.

[2:24]  ⁶ tc The LXX and Vulgate, along with one medieval Hebrew MS, lack this verb.

[2:24]  ⁷ tn Aram “cause me to enter.” So also in v. 25.

[2:24]  ⁸ tn Aram “the king.”

[3:12]  ⁷ sn Daniel’s absence from this scene has sparked the imagination of commentators, some of whom have suggested that perhaps he was unable to attend the dedication due to sickness or due to being away on business. Hippolytus supposed that Daniel may have been watching from a distance.
