7:8 “As I was contemplating the horns, another horn – a small one – came up between them, and three of the former horns were torn out by the roots to make room for it. 1  This horn had eyes resembling human eyes and a mouth speaking arrogant 2  things.

7:25 He will speak words against the Most High.

He will harass 3  the holy ones of the Most High continually.

20:4 Then 25  I saw thrones and seated on them were those who had been given authority to judge. 26  I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. These 27  had not worshiped the beast or his image and had refused to receive his mark on their forehead or hand. They 28  came to life 29  and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

[7:8]  1 tn Aram “were uprooted from before it.”

[7:8]  2 tn Aram “great.” So also in vv. 11, 20.

[7:25]  3 tn Aram “wear out” (so KJV, ASV, NRSV); NASB, NLT “wear down.” The word is a hapax legomenon in biblical Aramaic, but in biblical Hebrew it especially refers to wearing out such things as garments. Here it is translated “harass…continually.”

[7:25]  4 tn Aram “he will think.”

[7:25]  5 tn Aram “times and law.” The present translation is based on the understanding that the expression is a hendiadys.

[7:25]  6 sn Although the word times is vocalized in the MT as a plural, it probably should be regarded as a dual. The Masoretes may have been influenced here by the fact that in late Aramaic (and Syriac) the dual forms fall out of use. The meaning would thus be three and a half “times.”

[7:2]  7 tn Aram “answered and said.”

[7:2]  8 tn Aram “and behold.”

[7:2]  9 tn Or “the heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heavens” or “sky” depending on the context.

[20:4]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence within the narrative.

[20:4]  26 tn Grk “I saw thrones, and those seated on them, and judgment was given to them.” BDAG 567 s.v. κρίμα 3 says, “judging, judgment, the κρίμα ἐδόθη αὐτοῖς authority to judge was given to them Rv 20:4.”

[20:4]  27 tn Grk “God, and who.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation by supplying the pronoun “these” as subject.

[20:4]  28 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[20:4]  29 tn On the use of the aorist ἔζησαν (ezhsan) BDAG 425 s.v. ζάω 1.a.β says, “of dead persons who return to life become alive again: of humans in general (3 Km 17:23) Mt 9:18; Ac 9:41; 20:12; Rv 20:4, 5.”
