Daniel 8:16

8:16 Then I heard a human voice coming from between the banks of the Ulai. It called out, “Gabriel, ¹  enable this person to understand the vision.”

11:32 Then with smooth words he will defile ²  those who have rejected ³  the covenant. But the people who are loyal to ⁴  their God will act valiantly. ⁵ 

[8:16]  ¹ sn The only angels whose names are given in the OT are Gabriel (Dan 8:16; 9:21; cf. Luke 1:19, 26) and Michael (Dan 10:13, 21; 12:1; cf. Jude 9; Rev 12:7). The name Gabriel means in Hebrew “man of God,” and Michael means “who is like God?”

[11:32]  ² tn Or “corrupt.”

[11:32]  ³ tn Heb “acted wickedly toward.”

[11:32]  ⁴ tn Heb “know.” The term “know” sometimes means “to recognize.” In relational contexts it can have the connotation “recognize the authority of, be loyal to,” as it does here.

[11:32]  ⁵ sn This is an allusion to the Maccabean revolt, which struggled to bring about Jewish independence in the second century B.C.
