Deuteronomy 22:22

22:22 If a man is caught having sexual relations with ¹  a married woman ²  both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge ³  evil from Israel.

Proverbs 6:34

6:34 for jealousy kindles ⁴  a husband’s ⁵  rage,

and he will not show mercy ⁶  when he takes revenge.

[22:22]  ¹ tn Heb “lying with” (so KJV, NASB), a Hebrew idiom for sexual relations.

[22:22]  ³ tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.

[6:34]  ⁴ tn The word “kindles” was supplied in the translation; both “rage” and “jealousy” have meanings connected to heat.

[6:34]  ⁵ tn Heb “a man’s.”

[6:34]  ⁶ tn The verb חָמַל (khamal) means “to show mercy; to show compassion; to show pity,” usually with the outcome of sparing or delivering someone. The idea here is that the husband will not spare the guilty man any of the punishment (cf. NRSV “he shows no restraint”).
