[4:12]  1 tn The words “was heard” are supplied in the translation to avoid the impression that the voice was seen.

[4:22]  1 tn Heb “this.” The translation uses “that” to avoid confusion; earlier in the verse Moses refers to Transjordan as “this land.”

[8:15]  1 tn Heb “flaming serpents”; KJV, NASB “fiery serpents”; NAB “saraph serpents.” This figure of speech (metonymy) probably describes the venomous and painful results of snakebite. The feeling from such an experience would be like a burning fire (שָׂרָף, saraf).

[8:15]  2 tn Heb “the one who brought out for you water.” In the Hebrew text this continues the preceding sentence, but the translation begins a new sentence here for stylistic reasons.

[12:12]  1 tn Heb “within your gates” (so KJV, NASB); NAB “who belongs to your community.”

[12:12]  2 sn They have no allotment or inheritance with you. See note on the word “inheritance” in Deut 10:9.

[21:18]  1 tn Heb “and he does not listen to them.”

[21:20]  1 tc The LXX and Smr read “to the men,” probably to conform to this phrase in v. 21. However, since judicial cases were the responsibility of the elders in such instances (cf. Deut 19:12; 21:3, 6; 25:7-8) the reading of the MT is likely original and correct here.

[28:32]  1 tn Heb “and there will be no power in your hand”; NCV “there will be nothing you can do.”

[29:15]  1 tn This is interpreted by some English versions as a reference to generations not yet born (cf. TEV, CEV, NLT).

[32:4]  1 tc The LXX reads Θεός (qeos, “God”) for the MT’s “Rock.”

[32:4]  2 tn Or “just” (KJV, NAB, NRSV, NLT) or “righteous” (NASB).
