Exhortation to Instruction and Obedience

11:16 Make sure you do not turn away to serve and worship other gods! ¹ 

Deuteronomy 11:28

11:28 and the curse if you pay no attention ²  to his ³  commandments and turn from the way I am setting before ⁴  you today to pursue ⁵  other gods you have not known.

Deuteronomy 31:29

31:29 For I know that after I die you will totally ⁶  corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly ⁷  before the Lord, inciting him to anger because of your actions.” ⁸ 

[11:16]  ¹ tn Heb “Watch yourselves lest your heart turns and you turn aside and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

[11:28]  ² tn Heb “do not listen to,” that is, do not obey.

[11:28]  ³ tn Heb “the commandments of the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[11:28]  ⁴ tn Heb “am commanding” (so NASB, NRSV).

[11:28]  ⁵ tn Heb “walk after”; NIV “by following”; NLT “by worshiping.” This is a violation of the first commandment, the most serious of the covenant violations (Deut 5:6-7).

[31:29]  ³ tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “totally.”

[31:29]  ⁴ tn Heb “do the evil.”

[31:29]  ⁵ tn Heb “the work of your hands.”
