Deuteronomy 12:6

Context
12:6 And there you must take your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the personal offerings you have prepared, 1  your votive offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.

Deuteronomy 12:11

Context
12:11 Then you must come to the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to reside, bringing 2  everything I am commanding you – your burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, the personal offerings you have prepared, 3  and all your choice votive offerings which you devote to him. 4

Deuteronomy 14:22-29

Context
The Offering of Tribute

14:22 You must be certain to tithe 5  all the produce of your seed that comes from the field year after year. 14:23 In the presence of the Lord your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine, 6  your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 14:24 When he 7  blesses you, if the 8  place where he chooses to locate his name is distant, 14:25 you may convert the tithe into money, secure the money, 9  and travel to the place the Lord your God chooses for himself. 14:26 Then you may spend the money however you wish for cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or whatever you desire. You and your household may eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and enjoy it. 14:27 As for the Levites in your villages, you must not ignore them, for they have no allotment or inheritance along with you. 14:28 At the end of every three years you must bring all the tithe of your produce, in that very year, and you must store it up in your villages. 14:29 Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work you do.

Deuteronomy 26:12

Context
Presentation of the Third-year Tithe

26:12 When you finish tithing all 10  your income in the third year (the year of tithing), you must give it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows 11  so that they may eat to their satisfaction in your villages. 12

Deuteronomy 26:14

Context
26:14 I have not eaten anything when I was in mourning, or removed any of it while ceremonially unclean, or offered any of it to the dead; 13  I have obeyed you 14  and have done everything you have commanded me.

Leviticus 27:30-32

Context
Redemption of the Tithe

27:30 “‘Any tithe 15  of the land, from the grain of the land or from the fruit of the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord. 27:31 If a man redeems 16  part of his tithe, however, he must add one fifth to it. 17  27:32 All the tithe of herd or flock, everything which passes under the rod, the tenth one will be holy to the Lord. 18

Numbers 18:21-24

Context
18:21 See, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they perform – the service of the tent of meeting. 18:22 No longer may the Israelites approach the tent of meeting, or else they will bear their sin 19  and die. 18:23 But the Levites must perform the service 20  of the tent of meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. 21  It will be a perpetual ordinance throughout your generations that among the Israelites the Levites 22  have no inheritance. 23  18:24 But I have given 24  to the Levites for an inheritance the tithes of the Israelites that are offered 25  to the Lord as a raised offering. That is why I said to them that among the Israelites they are to have no inheritance.”

[12:6]  1 tn Heb “heave offerings of your hand.”

[12:11]  2 tn Heb “and it will be (to) the place where the Lord your God chooses to cause his name to dwell you will bring.”

[12:11]  3 tn Heb “heave offerings of your hand.”

[12:11]  4 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 12:5.

[14:22]  5 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, indicated in the translation by the words “be certain.”

[14:23]  6 tn This refers to wine in the early stages of fermentation. In its later stages it becomes wine (יַיִן, yayin) in its mature sense.

[14:24]  7 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “He” in 14:2.

[14:24]  8 tn The Hebrew text includes “way is so far from you that you are unable to carry it because the.” These words have not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons, because they are redundant.

[14:25]  9 tn Heb “bind the silver in your hand.”

[26:12]  10 tn Heb includes “the tithes of.” This has not been included in the translation to avoid redundancy.

[26:12]  11 tn The terms “Levite, resident foreigner, orphan, and widow” are collective singulars in the Hebrew text (also in v. 13).

[26:12]  12 tn Heb “gates.”

[26:14]  13 sn These practices suggest overtones of pagan ritual, all of which the confessor denies having undertaken. In Canaan they were connected with fertility practices associated with harvest time. See E. H. Merrill, Deuteronomy (NAC), 335-36.

[26:14]  14 tn Heb “the Lord my God.” See note on “he” in 26:2.

[27:30]  15 tn On the “tithe” system in Israel, see R. E. Averbeck, NIDOTTE 2:1035-55 and esp. pp. 1041-42 on Lev 27:30-33.

[27:31]  16 tn Heb “And if redeeming [infinitive absolute] a man redeems [finite verb].” For the infinitive absolute used to highlight contrast rather than emphasis see GKC 343 §113.p.

[27:31]  17 tn Heb “its one fifth on it.”

[27:32]  18 sn The tithed animal was the tenth one that passed under the shepherd’s rod or staff as they were being counted (see J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [WBC], 485, and B. A. Levine, Leviticus [JPSTC], 200).

[18:22]  19 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive construct of the verb “to bear” with the lamed (ל) preposition to express the result of such an action. “To bear their sin” would mean that they would have to suffer the consequences of their sin.

[18:23]  20 tn The verse begins with the perfect tense of עָבַד (’avad) with vav (ו) consecutive, making the form equal to the instructions preceding it. As its object the verb has the cognate accusative “service.”

[18:23]  21 sn The Levites have the care of the tent of meeting, and so they are responsible for any transgressions against it.

[18:23]  22 tn Heb “they”; the referent (the Levites) has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[18:23]  23 tn The Hebrew text uses both the verb and the object from the same root to stress the point: They will not inherit an inheritance. The inheritance refers to land.

[18:24]  24 tn The classification of the perfect tense here too could be the perfect of resolve, since this law is declaring what will be their portion – “I have decided to give.”

[18:24]  25 tn In the Hebrew text the verb has no expressed subject (although the “Israelites” is certainly intended), and so it can be rendered as a passive.
