Deuteronomy 13:9

[13:9]  1 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with the words “without fail” (cf. NIV “you must certainly put him to death”).

[13:9]  2 tn Heb “to put him to death,” but this is misleading in English for such an action would leave nothing for the others to do.

[14:25]  3 tn Heb “bind the silver in your hand.”

[15:21]  5 tn Heb “any evil blemish”; NASB “any (+ other NAB, TEV) serious defect.”

[17:1]  7 tn Heb “to the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 16:1.

[17:1]  8 tn The Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה (toevah, “an abomination”; cf. NAB) describes persons, things, or practices offensive to ritual or moral order. See M. Grisanti, NIDOTTE 4:314-18; see also the note on the word “abhorrent” in Deut 7:25.

[17:7]  9 tn Heb “the hand of the witnesses.” This means the two or three witnesses are to throw the first stones (cf. NCV, TEV, CEV, NLT).

[17:7]  10 tn Heb “the hand of all the people.”

[18:5]  11 tc Smr and some Greek texts add “before the Lord your God” to bring the language into line with a formula found elsewhere (Deut 10:8; 2 Chr 29:11). This reading is not likely to be original, however.

[18:5]  12 tn Heb “the name of the Lord.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[24:7]  13 tn Heb “from his brothers, from the sons of Israel.” The terms “brothers” and “sons of Israel” are in apposition; the second defines the first more specifically.

[24:7]  14 tn Or “and enslaves him.”

[24:7]  15 tn Heb “that thief.”

[24:7]  16 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the word “purge” in Deut 19:19.

[28:30]  15 tc For MT reading שָׁגַל (shagal, “ravish; violate”), the Syriac, Targum, and Vulgate presume the less violent שָׁכַב (shakhav, “lie with”). The unexpected counterpart to betrothal here favors the originality of the MT.
