Deuteronomy 15:2

Context
15:2 This is the nature of the cancellation: Every creditor must remit what he has loaned to another person; 1  he must not force payment from his fellow Israelite, 2  for it is to be recognized as “the Lord’s cancellation of debts.”

Deuteronomy 21:13

Context
21:13 discard the clothing she was wearing when captured, 3  and stay 4  in your house, lamenting for her father and mother for a full month. After that you may have sexual relations 5  with her and become her husband and she your wife.

Deuteronomy 22:22

Context

22:22 If a man is caught having sexual relations with 6  a married woman 7  both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge 8  evil from Israel.

Deuteronomy 24:4

Context
24:4 her first husband who divorced her is not permitted to remarry 9  her after she has become ritually impure, for that is offensive to the Lord. 10  You must not bring guilt on the land 11  which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

[15:2]  1 tn Heb “his neighbor,” used idiomatically to refer to another person.

[15:2]  2 tn Heb “his neighbor and his brother.” The words “his brother” may be a scribal gloss identifying “his neighbor” (on this idiom, see the preceding note) as a fellow Israelite (cf. v. 3). In this case the conjunction before “his brother” does not introduce a second category, but rather has the force of “that is.”

[21:13]  3 tn Heb “she is to…remove the clothing of her captivity” (cf. NASB); NRSV “discard her captive’s garb.”

[21:13]  4 tn Heb “sit”; KJV, NASB, NRSV “remain.”

[21:13]  5 tn Heb “go unto,” a common Hebrew euphemism for sexual relations.

[22:22]  5 tn Heb “lying with” (so KJV, NASB), a Hebrew idiom for sexual relations.

[22:22]  6 tn Heb “a woman married to a husband.”

[22:22]  7 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.

[24:4]  7 tn Heb “to return to take her to be his wife.”

[24:4]  8 sn The issue here is not divorce and its grounds per se but prohibition of remarriage to a mate whom one has previously divorced.

[24:4]  9 tn Heb “cause the land to sin” (so KJV, ASV).
