Deuteronomy 17:12

Context
17:12 The person who pays no attention 1  to the priest currently serving the Lord your God there, or to the verdict – that person must die, so that you may purge evil from Israel.

Deuteronomy 22:21-22

Context
22:21 the men of her city must bring the young woman to the door of her father’s house and stone her to death, for she has done a disgraceful thing 2  in Israel by behaving like a prostitute while living in her father’s house. In this way you will purge 3  evil from among you.

22:22 If a man is caught having sexual relations with 4  a married woman 5  both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge 6  evil from Israel.

Deuteronomy 26:13-14

26:13 Then you shall say before the Lord your God, “I have removed the sacred offering 7  from my house and given it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows just as you have commanded me. 8  I have not violated or forgotten your commandments. 26:14 I have not eaten anything when I was in mourning, or removed any of it while ceremonially unclean, or offered any of it to the dead; 9  I have obeyed you 10  and have done everything you have commanded me.

[17:12]  1 tn Heb “who acts presumptuously not to listen” (cf. NASB).

[22:21]  2 tn The Hebrew term נְבָלָה (nÿvalah) means more than just something stupid. It refers to a moral lapse so serious as to jeopardize the whole covenant community (cf. Gen 34:7; Judg 19:23; 20:6, 10; Jer 29:23). See C. Pan, NIDOTTE 3:11-13. Cf. NAB “she committed a crime against Israel.”

[22:21]  3 tn Heb “burn.” See note on Deut 21:21.

[22:22]  3 tn Heb “lying with” (so KJV, NASB), a Hebrew idiom for sexual relations.

[22:22]  4 tn Heb “a woman married to a husband.”

[22:22]  5 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.

[26:13]  4 tn Heb “the sacred thing.” The term הַקֹּדֶשׁ (haqqodesh) likely refers to an offering normally set apart for the Lord but, as a third-year tithe, given on this occasion to people in need. Sometimes this is translated as “the sacred portion” (cf. NASB, NIV, NRSV), but that could sound to a modern reader as if a part of the house were being removed and given away.

[26:13]  5 tn Heb “according to all your commandment that you commanded me.” This has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[26:14]  5 sn These practices suggest overtones of pagan ritual, all of which the confessor denies having undertaken. In Canaan they were connected with fertility practices associated with harvest time. See E. H. Merrill, Deuteronomy (NAC), 335-36.

[26:14]  6 tn Heb “the Lord my God.” See note on “he” in 26:2.
