18:15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you – from your fellow Israelites; ¹  you must listen to him.

8:20 Just like the nations the Lord is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you ²  because you would not obey him. ³

Promises of Good for Covenant Obedience

7:12 If you obey these ordinances and are careful to do them, the Lord your God will faithfully keep covenant with you ⁶  as he promised ⁷  your ancestors.

[18:15]  ¹ tc The MT expands here on the usual formula by adding “from among you” (cf. Deut 17:15; 18:18; Smr; a number of Greek texts). The expansion seems to be for the purpose of emphasis, i.e., the prophet to come must be not just from Israel but an Israelite by blood.

[8:20]  ² tn Heb “so you will perish.”

[8:20]  ³ tn Heb “listen to the voice of the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[1:17]  ³ tn Heb “you,” and throughout the verse (cf. NASB, NRSV).

[1:17]  ⁴ tn Heb “the small,” but referring to social status, not physical stature.

[7:12]  ⁴ tn Heb “will keep with you the covenant and loyalty.” On the construction used here, see v. 9.

[7:12]  ⁵ tn Heb “which he swore on oath.” The relative pronoun modifies “covenant,” so one could translate “will keep faithfully the covenant (or promise) he made on oath to your ancestors.”
